Anyone else notice a bright yellow spherical object in the sky today, wonder what it could be? :P
-
Nothing like that here, David. Chucking down all weekend. Getting colder now so perhaps the snow is coming and it may be brighter again...... :-\
-

It's called the 'snowbringer', David ... beware. We glimpsed it this morning and now we have quite a covering.
-
David we have had quite a bit of since Christmas here David and had 9 days on the trot without rain as well! I was a bit worried that water company would declare a drought :D No snow is forecast for me tonight or tomorrow ;D but we will have to wait and see.
-
S'no bringing it here. :o My car thermometer recorded the outside air temperature at 30oC yesterday. 8)

40oC on Friday - thankfully down to 24oC today!
cheers

We were down to 24oC today too. Rain forecast tomorrow. If I was in Dunblane that would be a certainty. Here in Auckland it's a maybe not! :)
-
So much for the fleeting glimpse of the sun yesterday. Back to normal today, mist down from the moor, drizzle and leaden skies. No snow though and I have to say it feels a bit warmer than yesterdays 4C.
-

It's arrived here too.....didn't realise the sun caused it ::)
-

Hmm.... it's not the only 'snowbringer', it seems- dull and damp morning here and no sign of the white stuff at all and the next thing I knew there was an inch or so of snow cover. Never even saw it happen!
From indoors it's very pretty.
-
Wet soggy stuff here, Maggi. Dripping off the pine trees when I was feeding the ponies and collecting droppings. Not very pleasant.
-
Do you have a large collection Roma? ;D

Not to be sniffed at, David!

had planned to tidy this up today, still snowing heavily.

To many difficult words in one sentence for "continental" me, Cliff ::) ;)
-
I do have a very large collection, David ;D No recent pics but here are two from February 2009 when blackbirds and redwings were tunneling in to get at the worms during a frosty spell. The heap has grown since then.
-
Living up to their names then: Turdus. ;D
-
3/4cm of snow here this morning but warmer now and turning to slush. Much worse to the north and east of us.
-
Snow started here round 12pm. It fell but didnt lye. When the wind kicked in with snow coming in hard from the south it began to stay. There is now quite a bit and the temperature has dropped from 5 to 0
-
Snow all gone here.
-
No sign of snow here as yet. Looking at the weather forecasts we may be one of the few areas to miss it. However, it's C-O-L-D -or maybe that's old-age talking.
-
:-\
-
Here is a thin layer of snow, and –19,4° C. The forecast for the next 10 days is pretty cold weather.
It takes a lot of wood for the fireplace.
-
only 4cm of snow on the car last night. Mostly gone this morning but its now snowing again just now
-
SNOW SNOW GO AWAY COME AGAIN ANOTHER DAY. I am fed up now :(
Last week when it was sunny and pretty the snow was so nice. Today, well need I say anymore .
Angie :)
-
I don't suppose it would be helpful to say that on Friday I'm going to have to put on a pair of socks (and shoes) for the first time this year?
-

NO ;)
Angie :)
-
Okay, so I won't say it then. :-X
-
To late Anthony but I am happy for you :). Today its Hat, scarf, gloves, boots and a car with heated seats. At least there is a big part of me that is always cosy :-X ;D
Angie :)
-
The sun shone all day today ;D Don't remember when last that happened.
-
I do. It was yesterday. 8)
-
15 cm of snow fell down today...4-5 weeks more until the first flowers appear i guess.....in a way it's good...i still have timber and firewood left in the forest to get out...80cm of ice on the lake...nice that too...at least what my kids thinks... who drives car there ;D
-
The sun shone all day today ;D Don't remember when last that happened.
Wasn't it a great feeling Roma. I was out in the garden all day, suffering now.
All the wonderful plants are popping up now. I do like this time of year.
Angie :)
-
I'm grateful that we've finally had a decent rain! :) Over an inch fell in the early hours of the morning.
The first "real" rain since August - it's just been dribs and drabs - no wonder so many plants have suffered :(
cheers

Leave some for us Fermi

The sun shone all day today ;D Don't remember when last that happened.
. . . . today, yesterday and almost all winter!
But the plants are freeze dried as the soil is frozen solid. My evergreens don't like sun, dry weather and frozen soil . . . . :-\
-
We have high pressure covering most of the UK and as such it is pulling in all the cloud (and cold) that should really be Tronds whilst he basks in sunshine.
-
We were suffering too today David. 27oC.
-
No clouds where we are David ! Wall to wall sunshine for the past three days. The green house is heating up to 27c during the day so I have to open all windows and the door to prevent overheating.
-
Yes Tom, you look to have done pretty well over the last few days. We've had a North East wind bringing lots of cloud in. Today, I understand, Plymouth had some sun but here, no more than 15 miles to the East, it's been grey all done.
Oh well Anthony, I can't have it both ways, at least I shouldn't get attacked by a shark!
-
Our favourite beach too. http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/beaches-closed-hunt-killer-shark-begins-5355291/video (http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/beaches-closed-hunt-killer-shark-begins-5355291/video)

Interesting winter here- started early, chilly (but never extreme- we have not even had -30C this winter, and -40C would not have been shocking) first couple of months, and mostly at or above average since Christmas, but still plenty of snow, in spite of a number of warm days.
Today a fresh 15cm or so, next few daytimes below freezing, then warm again next weekend..
-
Where is the snowman ;), with all that lovely snow you could have so much fun.
Angie :)
-
Glad I don't need to shovel that amount of snow, Cohan!
David, the weather here is back to normal: grey, some rain and about 5C so no baking in the sunshine! But last week we had dinner outside 3 times.
Anthonys 27C would be extreme here even in midsummer :-\
-
I'm here because I had to shovel that amount of snow. Four deep plus what the snow plough had piled on top, to enable a shipping container to be delivered to our house. In the end the container was never released from Glasgow, so we had three small furniture vans turn up and the most objectionable crew attached. Several items were damaged, including my Victorian barometer, as a result. Avoid AngloPacific. They refused to pay for the damage on the barometer as it wasn't listed separately, even though they were supposed to itemise everything!! :'(
-
We've just has 22 days in a row without a single drop of rain and lovely spring-like weather. No heat on in the car for the three weeks.
Do you remember what happened this time last year? Very warm in March, I was at Anne's and we had a BBQ, and the weather went down hill after that
-
Angie, we commented that that was snowman snow- most of our snow is too dry to make snowmen, but this one was wetter- however we were barely able to remain upright after shovelling, let alone spend time building a snowman...lol By today, the temp had gone a bit lower, and the snow was once again too 'dry' to stick together, not that I'd have had time to build a snowman anyway, today was a work day..
-
It is awfully bonnie to look at ;) I just love making snowmen, I suppose its the big kid in me.
Angie :)
-
We did last year..lol.. unfortunately snow mostly means a lot of hard work for us, no energy left for play..lol
-

Yep shovelling snow is hard work, good exercise though and thats coming from someone that hates exercise ::) ;D

It is fascinating that gardeners all round the world (like Australian dairy farmers) are never happy with the weather.
Would we complain if the weather was consistently suitable for growing just our favorite plants? Most likely not since we then wouldn't be able to extend ourselves.
Enough philosophy! I do have a complaint.
We in Tasmania have had a LO N G , H O T and D R Y period (4 months without any useful rain) so keeping plants alive is a real challenge. But the roses are wonderful - no pests at all!!
I notice today that my Cantua Buxifolia looks distinctly uncomfortable. I thought it would grow in a blast furnace! Time for it to get a ration of soaking water.
John
-
John. never heard of cantua but it seems to be a very beautiful plant from the warm and moist Yungas of South America. Nothing for me then :-\
Here it is cool and moist.
-
Another very warm day today. After work I had to open the car windows to let the hot air out
-
Perhaps two days rain in Dunedin was needed? ::)
-
We're in the middle of a four month drought. Mmm. That will only make sense in two months time. ::) Well, we haven't had any serious rain since before Christmas. It is killing the grass, but it will recover. I've seen that video. It is killing established trees, including Euclayptus, which is supposed to be drought resistant!
-
It's dry in the deep south too . Balclutha has just had its sunniest summer on record but there were no extreme temperatures and we had a rainy day in early February . The Meconopsis have hated it with poor seed set but the Gazanias are having a great time and Delosperma seed is easy when there is no rain to disperse the seed .
Hope you were not in the traffic jam Anthony
-
We have had the driest and one of the coldest winters since 1942 here where I live. The last week has been about normal but the forecast says sunny, dry and unseasonally cold weather next week.
-
Traffic jam had eased by the time I was heading north into Remuera after 7 yesterday evening Steve. Ridiculous that one accident can cause total gridlock! :(
-
Here is South Australia it is so dry and hot. I must have scared the thunderstorm away yesterday by cleaning out the gutters. Lots of enticing dark clouds move over but that is all that they do the last week.
-
Lets hope we all get some rain soon . We have traffic problems in Balclutha too . One car in front of you at the give way sign means traffic is heavy , two cars is a traffic jam and three cars is gridlock - may as well park up and walk
-
;D ;D ;D Bet Stirling's just as busy?
-
Hope you all get some rain where needed! I don't complain much about our weather these days (though sometimes about the shovelling ;D ) since overall we have been quite near normal mostly in the last years, unlike all the extreme heat, cold, drought, floods in so many parts of the world...
-
;D ;D ;D Bet Stirling's just as busy?
With all the milk tankers there it is quite busy but then it has only one street and hence no intersections , so as long as you don't stop you're fairly safe .
For a wee while there I wasn't sure whether you meant Stirling near Balclutha or Stirling near Dunblane
-
Yours. I long to be away from here in Auckland, but needs must. I learned to drive in Callander, 16 miles from the other Stirling, and there were no traffic lights or roundabouts in the town then. Even when we left Scotland over two years ago I could still drive to school in 25 minutes for a 23 mile journey. The journey was shorter - 20 miles - 30 odd years ago because there were no roundabouts and no roads across perfectly good farm land to make the journey quicker but meaning you circled your destination and approached from the opposite direction. Actually, all that did was negate the increase in time an increase in traffic density had brought about. ::)
-
I wasn't sure whether to post these in 'Weather' or 'Flowering Now'. Back to snow again here. It is melting a bit so hopefully it won't stay around too long.
-
Snow + a very strong wind => snowbanks :-\ :-\
-
Good Grief, Wim! :o
Can you remember ever having had so much snow in March?
Todays morning it started to snow in large flakes in Frankfurt area, too.
-
God Grief, Wim! :o

No, I can't and my parents don't recall having that much snow in March which stays either....according to our weather forecast we had to go back to the 1890's to have temperatures remaining under 0°C for an entire day around the 10th of March too! Records are being broken :-\ :-\
-
Wim,
the winter storm caused lots of chaos today, in Belgium, in North of France, Germany.
In my area a mass collison on A45 highway happend, more then 100 cars were involved, fortunately nobody got deadly injured. But highway is still closed.

Meanwhile down under, yesterday I saw a white fluffy thing in the sky for the first time in nearly a week. My son tells me it was a cloud, but my memory is quite short these days. It seems to have gone today. :-\ If there is not any rain soon farmers here will be in really serious trouble.
-
it has been seriously snowing too in north of france.
Never seen that in March.
-
Saw on late TV News last night the forecast for UK and Europe with maximum temps at 4 and 5 degrees. When will Winter end?
Meanwhile here in Tasmania we had 37 degrees yesterday, high fire danger today across the whole state with strong winds today. When will Summer end?
Look out New Zealand, it is coming your way!!
John
-
And we have just one world, but we live in different ones, wow the sun's gone to hell ....sang Dire Strait. ;)

This has caused a bit of a debate on the farming programme on the radio today. http://hot-topic.co.nz/till-your-well-runs-dry-nz-drought-hits-record-levels/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+co%2FRbRF+(Hot+Topic) (http://hot-topic.co.nz/till-your-well-runs-dry-nz-drought-hits-record-levels/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+co%2FRbRF+(Hot+Topic))

This year´s coldest from last night -27oC. Now -23, not that bad. Quite chilly spring weather though :)

Yes Panu, I suppose -23 is better than -27 -and yes, it is still too cold for spring. :'(
-
And todays forecast more rain, with the possability of more snow showers ,oh and we could have some sunny spells as well (most unlikely me thinks)
-
No, more sun and dry but cold :-\ I am longing for a real warm spring shower!
-
Hello all and I am informed that this is the first day of spring well here is what we have this morning, cheers Ian the Christie kind
-
That is ridiculous, Ian ... very pretty, but ridiculous!!!
It's the East Lancashire AGS Show this weekend in our home village and they have predicted blizzards for Thursday evening, Friday and on into the weekend. AGS Shows cancelled for gas leaks and snowdrifts in the same season ... can that be possible?
CERTAINLY NOT - THE LANCASHIRE SPIRIT WILL WIN THROUGH.
-
Its amazing how the snow fell in N Ireland.
Where I work no snow, bottom of my estate not a drop, top end of my estate several inches, 5 miles one direction nothing but 10 miles further too much. On Sunday I drove 35 miles to look for a Bittern. 5 miles not much snow, 10 miles horrendous amounts of snow, a few miles on and not a drop, a few more a wee bit, a few more masses of snow, a few miles further and none. Outskirts of my destination a lot of snow. In the town nothing. The southern edge of the glens no snow but a few miles on and you've probably seen the news
-
We have been lucky here with no snow at all except for a few flakes falling occasionally. However, further South and North they had a rough time last weekend. We could also see the Antrim coast on the horizon, standing out white from the sea.
At Troon today we were down at the harbour watching the Eider ducks in display mode. We noticed that one of the Arran car ferries was in and loading up with vehicles - mainly 4 x 4's. I presume she was carrying workers and stores to take to Campbeltown to help in the restoration of power supplies. The ship made rather a nice picture as she left harbour.
-
At least the weather gives the chance for such great photos, Tom, that's a small comfort to me.

Mark,
Will and I hope that you sort out this weather before we come to visit in May! ;D
Yesterday we had 35oC and this morning woke to a nicely watered garden as we had 14mm of rain overnight with an expected top of 21oC - much nicer!
cheers

WOW, I think Spring may have sprung, double figures (11C) at one stage of today. We were in a shaded valley in Cornwall at the Cornwall Spring Flower Show at the time. Not very much like our typical Shows but enjoyable all the same. Daffodils shown mostly as single flower stems with no foliage; camellia flower heads; some Magnolia flowers and a few other odds and sods. I would have had some pictures if only I hadn't forgotten the camera ::) It's a fairly big affair held in the grounds of Boconnoc House, mainly held outside or in marquees with bags of nurseries present. Of the ones present some of us will be more familiar with Julian and Sarah Sutton's Desireable Plants http://www.desirableplants.com/index.html (http://www.desirableplants.com/index.html) and Chris and Lorraine Birchall's Tale Valley Nurseries http://www.talevalleynursery.co.uk/ (http://www.talevalleynursery.co.uk/)
May Spring continue to be sprung.
-
The damage to plants in my garden is terrible. Many were forced on during very warm days in February to be then get covered in snow. The snow is mostly gone now but warm days up to 11c followed by temperatures down to -4 or -5 is causing more damage. Worst hit I think are the orchids
-
For those of you in the UK (and Ireland) who are enjoying the relatively warm and dry spell I'm contemplating putting shade paint on my greenhouse on Monday and you know what that means don't you?
-
Don't you dare :P
-
;D ;D ;D
-
That would explain the clouds and drizzle then
-
Don't you dare :P
What if David put it on the west side only? We need a break from the sun and warmth.

I need rain, do it. Why have you waited so long? :D
-
Done! Guess what the forecast says for the next three days at least?
-
Thanks the sea mist kept drifting in for most of today.
-
I want some rain please. Any amount will do. 18C yesterday. 20C today

I did it once, never again but feel free as I have moved many plants this past weekend and desperately need it to rain. Saying that its Malvern Spring show later this week so rain is guaranteed :D
-
Done! Guess what the forecast says for the next three days at least?
I read your post when I was in Prague and I was dreading coming home ;D ;D
Angie :)
-
Dry in UK???
it's raining since almost 3 weeks in north of france, temperature is round 5°c at night and 9-10° during day.
I would pray any god to have a sweet 18°c and no more rain!!!!
if you really need water i can unwind the hose in the tunnel, it's just straight the end of street ;D
Even some saxifraga are rotten; never seen that since i began growing alpines 20's back
My 300 gal. water tanks were filled in 4 days.
-
We were feeling hard done by because the couple of sunny days we had turned back to cold and wet - but look what my sister and brother-in-law woke up to in Dunedin today - seems the NZ winter is really arrived....
-
One can barely see all those white flowers under that lot, Maggi.
-
Yep . Gave the hand-pollination a miss today
-
Phew for a minute I thought the snow was in Aberdeen ::)
-
My husband didn't get into work today apparently. On the Otago Daily Times site there is a photo of my street!
About to leave sunny warm Rome for that lot. Thanks Maggi for making me feel better about it!
Susan

Well, today was a real shock to the system. Wind from the Antarctic, rain, hail, sleet. 8oC and dark on Heidi's walk round the Cascade Walkway near Howick at 6.45 a.m., with thunder in the mix. Rain and thunder again at Totara Park, near Manukau City, at 4 p.m. and the temperature had dropped to 6oC. Both places 10 minutes by car in opposite directions from the house, and the morning walk due to kids at hockey practice, and the evening due to Lucy at violin lesson. This evening I had to go into the garage and bring out the mains gas heater to bring the lounge up from 14C to 19C - the thermostat setting on the heater. Oh for central heating and double glazing. :(

There may just be time for you to reach a shoe shop to buy some nice winter boots, Susan.......
-
Phew for a minute I thought the snow was in Aberdeen ::)
We have had a snowfall in Aberdeen as late as June 12th, Diane - but if we got as much as Dunedin just had I'd be packing my bags and heading to the Czech Republic as fast as possible!
-
We have had a snowfall in Aberdeen as late as June 12th, Diane - but if we got as much as Dunedin just had I'd be packing my bags and heading to the Czech Republic as fast as possible!
And down here in the Midlands, the latest date of serious snow that I remember was 2nd June 1975 - the ground was completely white, we must have had a couple of inches.
-
Your weather down there seems very familiar. Wouldn't raise an eyebrow if we got snow in November but if we got it now I would move ;)
Maggi, have you sent skis to your sister?
-
Yep . Gave the hand-pollination a miss today
....but did you change out of the jandals? ::)
-

I haven't.... but she has a tin-tray, for sure.....[attachimg=1]
-
....but did you change out of the jandals? ::)
Sacrilege, Maggi ... utter sacrilege!!!
-
Jandals are perfect in snow - you do not get snow in your shoes! And in rain too: you do not need to take them off to pour out the water!
-
Maggi - Just dropped an email to Toolie telling him that yesterday was my first day this year that I hadn't worn jandals . However , I did leave them plugged in to the jandal warmers overnight so nice and toastie today
Hoy - Jandals are no good for me in the snow as they flick snow up my back and I get a cold back
-
Jandals, too bad to get a cold back (even worse than a cold shoulder) but have you tried to wear a sweater?
-
Jandals, have you tried to wear a sweater?
;D ;D ;D You're funny

Don't buy any Uggs. You need to get to Oz or NZ to buy proper ones.
