http://www.exhibitions.co.uk/event/rhs-london-plant-and-design-show-1 (http://www.exhibitions.co.uk/event/rhs-london-plant-and-design-show-1)
I see it gives the dates as  11th - 12th February 2014 - but I can still see no sign of the event on the RHS site - I have emailed the RHS to ask when the dates will be posted on their website.

Edit:  RHS gives dates in email as - RHS London Plant and Design Show - Feb 18-19  2014
Title: Re: Events/Sales 2014

I have been given these dates by the RHS -
- RHS London Plant and Design Show - Feb 18-19
- RHS Great London Plant Fair - April 1-2
- RHS London Orchid & Botanical Art Show - April 11-12

Can't help  feeling it would be more useful for them  to get these dates on their website sooner though!

Yippee!  We won't have to split ourselves in half in February.  The HPS Galanthus Group Secretary has just confirmed to me that the info in their last Newsletter is correct and their 'do' is on Sunday 16th February at Ragley Hall in Warwickshire.

Off to book a hotel now while there are some £29 rooms left!

Tom has been leveling the lawn and building me some raised beds so I've been having to fill them, shame  :D

Hello Lina,
the talk of Hagen in Düsseldorf is on the 23.November 2013.
If you intend to come I can give you all necessary informatiom.
It could be a good chance to get to know German Galantophiles.
You can contact me at every time.

Thank you Hagen and Ulli for the information.
The talk in Munster is by Michael Dreisvogt about snowdrops on 16th of november. I was wrong ofcourse. In facebook someone mentioned your talk and I mixed it up. Sorry about this.
The 23 of november I have a diner with 16 gardenfriends at my house. A little difficult to change the date for such a diner. So it is impossible for me to go to Dusseldorf.
It is a pity.

But there will be other chances to hear you maybe in the future. Can you please put the information here in the forum?

Thanks,
Lina.

What are the RHS up to - I now see from the RHS website that they have moved the February Show to Fri 21st/Sat 22nd February - seriously inconvenient!!!  Another part of their website says the 18th/19th February - really wish they would sort this out, causing all sorts of problems here!! ??? >:(

Goodness only knows - their capacity  for their right hand not to know what their left hand is doing is beyond remarkable. The impression is given that they care very little for their "audience" and its need for reliable information.  Reaction to contact about such things is also less than helpful.  (Sigh)

I know what you mean Maggie, their website is so misleading and confusing - depending which link you follow, one bit says the show date is 18th/19th February and another link says it is 21st/22nd February!  How is anyone supposed to understand that!!!  They need to get a grit >:(

Reply from the RHS :

Dear Ms Young,

Thank you for your e-mail.

I do apologise for the confusion with the dates for the London Plant and Design Show.
We set our show dates a year or more in advance and therefore it can sometimes be necessary for us to change dates due to unanticipated circumstances.

I agree that we should have made it clearer that dates can be subject to change, and we will ensure that this information is included on our website in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to highlight this for us.

I am sorry for the inconvenience caused.

We look forward to seeing you at the show which will be taking place on 21st and 22nd February 2014

Best wishes

Val Bourne is a well-known, award winning author and journalist, and a leading proponent of natural gardening. Val Bourne's obsession about snowdrops almost happened by accident - follow her journey and learn about the history, the people and how to grow them in the garden.

Talk by Matt Bishop: A tour of Snowdrop freaks from the perspective of a snowdrop nutter.

Matt Bishop is a lifelong Galanthophile and is in the process of writing the eagerly anticipated supplement to the Galanthus Monograph, Snowdrops.  Snowdrops 2 will be available soon.  He runs a small business dealing in unusual and sought after snowdrop.

Last year I came by change upon Deene Park http://www.deenepark.com/ (http://www.deenepark.com/) (6m NE of Corby off A43).  They will be open to view the snowdrops on Sundays 16th and 23rd February.  They have vast swathes of nivalis and a small collection of 'specials'.

I could recycle that description for Chippenham Park, which is off the beaten track between Newmarket and Mildenhall http://www.chippenhamparkgardens.info/information.htm (http://www.chippenhamparkgardens.info/information.htm) .  They plan to open every weekend in February 2014 for snowdrop viewing but could open earlier or later depending on the weather, so consult their website before visiting.

Sorry for taking a while to get back to this one. I'm planning to do two different talks next year; one concentrating on new developments which I tend to update with each year's crop of new images, keeping in the odd favourite, and another on Freaks and variation in snowdrops. I will check which I'm doing where and post this shorlty.

And just a quick thank you to everyone who replied to my appeal for info last week!

Best wishes,

Matt

Welcome, Rudi!

I think we have enjoyed that video  from Germany in the past -  it is worth another look!

Some English details of the Nettetaler Day are here : http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=10892.msg287114#msg287114 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=10892.msg287114#msg287114)

A mecca for plant collectors : The Nettetaler Snowdrop Days 2014

The snowdrop days in Nettetal have for years been one of the first important dates of the school year . Renowned exhibitors from home and abroad of rare snowdrops, perennials and other garden plants and many more are there again to present  the snowdrops in  bloom. The experience of recent years has shown that there is no bad weather at this Mecca of the plant collector . Already the opening on Saturday was thronged by  the visitors last year, despite frigid temperatures. Reason enough there in 2014 for that: because this time the important British snowdrop garden centers will also be present to offer  their exquisite varieties.
For the first time, exhibitors will be in 2014 no longer to be found in front of the artists' café, but on the grounds of the country cafes »Go to Muhlenberg ." It is within easy walking distance to the previous venue. The Oirlicher flower garden and the extensive collection of Galanthus Marlu and Günter Waldorf will again be open to visitors during the event in 2014 .

An American snowdrop event....
On Saturday, March 8, at 11 am, Matt Bishop, principal author of Snowdrops: A Monograph of Cultivated Galanthus (the snowdrop "bible:), is presenting the annual Bank to Bend Lecture on snowdrops at Winterthur Garden and Museum in Delaware.  Admission of $20 for nonmembers/$10 for members includes a guided tour of Winterthur's famous March bank, one of the biggest displays of naturalized snowdrops in the U.S., and access to specialty nurseries selling snowdrops and other winter interest plants.  To register, call 302-888-4600, www.winterthur.org (http://www.winterthur.org).

I highly encourage anyone who can to attend this event in order to hear forum member and snowdrop expert Matt Bishop speak, to tour this amazing garden, and to have access to the snowdrops and other winter interest plants for sale including those from my own nursery Carolyn's Shade Gardens.  For information on Winterthur and photos from the garden during last year's event when Alan Street spoke, go here: http://carolynsshadegardens.com/2013/06/22/winterthur-part-1-late-winter-2013/. Yes, I was thinking that too, Emma.  But I also thought that the lack of complaints this year might be indicative of a waning popularity for the "Galanthus Gala" now that times are hard and there are more competing events.

The problem seems to be to find a new garden willing to open for so many people. It is easy to establish an event every year at the same place, but what makes the Gala the Gala is that it is every year at another place with a new garden to visit. But after so many years this is getting difficult.
And therefore only the Monksilver event should be called the Gala. They invented it!

The Gala is intended to take place on 15th February and I would be very surprised if it does not go ahead.  But I don't recall it ever being this late in the year with no letters of invitation received.

Hello Alan,
the journey from the " Germans-Galanthour 2014" goes to scotland and the gala is not mentioned. Until now, the "galanthour" always at the Gala. So my question.
Title: Re: Events/Sales 2014
Post by: Alan_b on December 22, 2013, 08:52:33 PM
Uwe, I presume Iris Ney, the organiser of the "Galanthour 2014" coach tour from Germany could tell you why she has decided to go to Scotland.  There are several venues in Scotland that would be logical choices for the Galanthus Gala but I'm not sure how far the majority of the regular Gala attendees who do not travel by coach would be prepared to venture.

The SRGC Early Bulb Day is on 15th February in Dunblane and there are a great many openings planned for the Scottish Snowdrop Festival :
http://www.visitscotland.com/see-do/events/scottish-snowdrop-festival (http://www.visitscotland.com/see-do/events/scottish-snowdrop-festival)

"As part of Homecoming Scotland, the 2014 Scottish Snowdrop Festival runs from 1 February to 16 March. It features at least 53 venues, many of which are free to visit, and between them they will display hundreds of varieties of this delicate white flower.

Snowdrops are very versatile and this is reflected in the regional spread of gardens and places taking part, from Arbriachan Garden Nursery which overlooks Loch Ness, to the historic grounds of Dryburgh Abbey in The Scottish Borders.

Many of the gardens are opening especially for the festival, including both private collections and places which are usually closed in winter. Growing in size each year, this year's festival includes eight new places to visit. Taking part for the first time are Rossie House and the town of Coupar Angus in Perthshire, Bruckhills Croft in Aberdeenshire, Brooklands and Craichlaw in Dumfries & Galloway, Lindores House in The Kingdom of Fife, Islay Estate in Argyll & The Isles and West Plean House in Loch Lomond, The Trossachs & The Forth Valley

Some venues, including the National Trust for Scotland property Greenbank Garden in Glasgow, offer the chance to warm up with a cup of tea and a snack once you’ve ambled around the garden, and even purchase bulbs and gifts. Look out for events at a number of locations, including gardener-led walks at Dunskey Gardens in Portpatrick, a weekend of arts, crafts and cycling in Couper Angus, and the annual Snowdrops by Starlight event at Cambo Estate in Fife. This evening spectacular amongst the snowdrop woodlands will invite you to don a head torch and be led through a magical glen of light featuring kinetic and sound sculptures!"

So there are plenty of things to tempt our German Galanthophile friends to visit Scotland - and who knows, a change may be as good as a rest!

Even if Joe Sharman was incapacitated, he has friends and colleagues who should be able to step in to fill the breach; "mrohowes" who sells his nursery's snowdrops on eBay, for example.  Indeed I'm not too far away myself and could spare a little time to pitch-in if help were needed.  But if there was some last minute change of plans, say the garden visit fell through, that could lead to a delay.  I'm sure we will find out eventually.  Joe's rather secretive nature makes for mysteries like this.

I am sure it will be a case of finalising plans - in the past when there have been glitches we have had to wait for our invitation!  A huge amount of organization goes into the Gala, and Joe does like to do it all himself!

Hello all, I have had contact with Iris  Ney, the German tour is to be in Scotland and I have organised some areas to visit we go to Brechin Castle then our nursery also they plan Cambo have suggested a special woodland walk near Cyril. I also contacted RBGE for a tour round their snowdrops any way we will make them all very welcome, the group are only in Scotland for 4 days so not much time, cheers Ian the Christie kind.

As Iris writes in her German newsletter, she got a Christmas card from Joe with the note, there would be no Gala next year. Therefore she decided to organize the tour to Scotland.

Well it would be sad if the Gala does not take place in 2014 and if it has definitely been cancelled, discourteous of Joe Sharman not to let this be more widely known.  Hopefully there has just been some confusion caused by a delay, rather than an outright cancellation.

I have it on good authority, that there is a Gala intended but there is difficulty finding a new venue at present. If this continues to be a problem then an old venue will be used.

I hope if it's not happening we will be told and can make other plans .

So there are plenty of things to tempt our German Galanthophile friends to visit Scotland - and who knows, a change may be as good as a rest!

Definitely Maggi! Me (and my tour members) are very much looking forward to Scotland! Thank you so much at this point again Ian for your wonderful and spontaneous help!

I can't really assure that there will be no Gala at all!

Since September I kept on asking Joe about where we will go. (For me it is best to organize my Galantour in summer as I have much more time than and so early there is a good range of hotels that would be able to accomodate my group in February.) I first got response from Joe that he still is about to find a place and therefore can't tell where it will be at that point. Later in winter he did not answer but for me that means: he does not really have fixed something and is still in search of a place. For that reason I thought it would not be very helpful for me to bother him too much by asking - especially as I know how busy he is and that I am not the only person who tries to get him to respond ;).

In the christmas card he sent to me he wrote just two words about next years Gala: 'Gala stalled'. Therefore I decided to do something else with my group. For me that does not necessarily mean that there will definitely be no Gala - it could also be that Joe wanted to give me the chance to organize something else for my group as his organisation takes still a while. So I hope that he will at a certain point come back to all of us Galanthophiles that have to know about this event.

I wish you all a peaceful christmas with more than just tree ships ;).

Cheers,
Iris

Although the calendar is very busy I'm hoping to have the usual informal meet here on Sun 2nd March, don't think that clashes with anything (please correct me if I'm wrong!) and it will have to be cleared with the owners when they return in the new year, want to use the tea room again which shouldn't be a problem.

Harveys Garden Plants (east of Bury St. Edmunds) are holding "A Celebration of Snowdrops" on Saturday 8th February.  I have not been able to ascertain the details; the event is listed here: http://www.harveysgardenplants.co.uk/Talks.asp (http://www.harveysgardenplants.co.uk/Talks.asp)

Nor has it been mentioned on this particular thread that the Galanthus Gala scheduled for 15th February has been cancelled but hopefully there will be a Snowdrop Collectors event in Shaftesbury.  Maybe Brian can update his excellent list of all the events?

Just heard on Radio Norfolk today that on February 2 Blacksmiths Cottage Snowdrop Day Rushall, Norfolk will be more of a local sale ie no speakers this year.  Next year it will be later so that the risk of getting stuck in the muddy field when parking will be lessened!

Ben tells me that the Blacksmith's day this year will be a free event 10am-2pm with a selection of nurseries (inside) and the opportunity to view some of the growing beds (contain 200+ cultivars) including the new (unseen) Norfolk snowdrops.

A belated Happy New Year to everyone - is anyone going to Myddleton and does anyone know who will be selling - Iam really hoping to get a couple of snowdrops that have been on my wish list for a few years now.

Last year they produced a small taster list of sellers and what seemed to be quite rare plants but I cannot find anything as yet.

As this will be my first outing to an 'event' can anyone give me any guidance on what to expect please.

Thanks

Last year a long queue formed at the entrance to the event; you would need to get there perhaps an hour in advance of the opening time to be towards the front of the queue.  Staff move up the queue and sell tickets so there is no delay at the start.  At the official opening time there is a big rush and the most sought-after snowdrops sell-out almost very quickly indeed.  After the first 15 minutes or so things calm down and there will be plenty left.

The only sellers we know will be there in 2014 are Wol and Sue Staines (Glen Chantry).  They usually hand out a list of what will be available on their stand prior to the opening.

Ivy Cottage snowdrops will also be there (Michael and Anne Broadhurst) and I think you can just about guarantee that besides Monksilver ie Joe Sharman, Valerie Bexley and Richard Bashford from Woodchippings would be selling.

If anyone wants to coma back to Benington after the sale let me know, Is only about 30 mins away  straight up A10 then a few lanes, can easily arrange a walk around the garden. Not sure how much there will be to see, masses are probably still many weeks away but varieties are shooting up fast.

Thank you so much for the heads up - does anyone know who would possibly have my wish list on their stands -
E.A. Bowles
rosemary Burnham
Any spikey snowdrops - fluff in particular

I know I am not asking for much but fingers n toes are crossed - oh and Mr Blobby

Thank you all for your wonderful advice - Jane

Monksilver Nursery (Joe Sharman) should have E.A. Bowles, and Glen Chantry Snowdrops (Sue and Wol Staines) should have Rosemary Burnham.

Monksilver Nursey was the first to get hold of and sell 'E.A.Bowles' and (I'm pretty sure) 'Mr Blobby'; they're both relatively new so I would be surprised if you found another nursery selling them yet.  They have also 'launched' a number of new spikey doubles.

'Rosemary Burnham', by contrast, is a well-established snowdrop that might potentially turn up on any stand although Martin is right that Glen Chantry are a good bet.

So, whilst standing in the queue, get the Glen Chantry handout and check to see if 'Rosemary Burnham' is on sale.  If it is, rush over there as soon as the gates are open and ask for it by name so you don't waste time looking.  Once purchased, hurry over to see Joe Sharman.  You might be able to order snowdrops for delivery/collection later in the season if he has not bought all the ones you want.

Thank you such everyone for your advice - I may even meet some of you there - there have been sales of Mr Blobby on Ebay for the last couple of years but the price it went for was very commendable.

I will be setting off very early in the morning to get there for opening times so if anyone hears me snoring please kick me.

Thanks

Snowdrop sales at such events are almost inevitably made in cash and without the aid of a cash register so you don't get a receipt.  Stands are rarely labelled so if you don't recognise the vendor you may not even know who you are buying from!  In part this reflects the fact that many snowdrop vendors operate on a very small scale; some are essentially collectors selling spares.

Thanks Brian - can't seem to access that at the moment but will try later. This will be our first sojourn into the more rarified world of snowdrops so we might wait until after the initial 15 minutes rush that Alan mentioned! On a much smaller and simpler scale we are preparing a small display for the 'Best of Faversham' market on the 1st February, inspired in part by the posts on here - I don't think many local gardeners will pay so much for plants but we aim to give background information on a range of plants to illustrate the connections to gardens and gardeners, especially a few in Kent itself, and hopefully encourage some hardy souls to visit us later in the month!

There are lots of gardens open for "snowdrop visits" from the NGS scheme : http://www.ngs.org.uk/news-features/features/snowdrop-garden-openings.aspx (http://www.ngs.org.uk/news-features/features/snowdrop-garden-openings.aspx) - includine quite afew owned by forumists, I see!

But, you might prefer a day where you can learn lots, be entertained and get a spot of retail therapy ...... in which case, you need Shaftesbury's Inaugural Snowdrop Study, Sale & Social Day  on 15th February 2014  .....  Three talks by fine speakers- sales ..... what could be better for those in striking distance of Shaftesbury on that day?

I had a very pleasant visit to see the snowdrops at Rosemount in Northamptonshire last year http://www.ngs.org.uk/gardens/gardenfinder/garden.aspx?id=23144 (http://www.ngs.org.uk/gardens/gardenfinder/garden.aspx?id=23144) .  The garden is also covered in naturalised crocuses and looks lovely in February.

Back from Holland/Belgium over a stormy North Sea. Kalmthout Arboretum was pretty sodden and the snowdrop event lacked some of the prominent names such as Valentin Wijnen, so I was disappointed in hoping to be able to see some of the more recent Continental discoveries. Called in to see the Dutch National Collection at Annie Fallingers where I received a warm greeting. Annie is growing lots of different varieties very well in a rich loamy soil. (Thou shalt not covert thy neighbour's ox, nor his ass, nor his soil etc...). As always when large numbers of different varieties of snowdrops are growing close together, some interesting seedlings had appeared and been marked by Annie.

Overnight at Volendam. Broek-in-Waterland had huge numbers of wildfowl - overwintering Whooper swans, geese, ducks, snowbuntings, even cranes. The highlight of the visit along with the fish soup at Volendam and the kibbeling at Marken.

Battled across the polders in gale force winds on Sunday morning to an equally warm welcome at Zaandam, for Gerard Oud's Zaanse Schans snowdrops event. This event felt like de Boschoeve but on a smaller scale, with nurserymen selling plenty of other types of plant in addition to snowdrops - rhubarb alongside Arnott. Found Daphne Bholua Gurkha and also Edgworthia Chrysantha Red Dragon, which I have only ever seen previously at Kew. Result! Gerard had a flowering pot of Elizabeth Harrison on his stand, which was attracting the photographers.

I recommend this event to any UK galanthophile who also enjoys birdwatching.

(re "1600 snowdrop and thefts)
One knock-on effect of all this is on large gardens which are open regularly with snowdrop collections and which cannot provide the security that a nursery can.
Tonight I have just been looking for opening details of three 'stately home' gardens near here which have opened with special snowdrop events that I have been to in the past. One is not opening now until the end of March and the other two have removed all mention of their snowdrop collections from their websites. Such a shame.

Luckily The National Garden Scheme has a long list still of gardens open to view snowdrops :

The two articles were written for the newsletter of the Irish Garden Plant Society about two years ago. The list of Irish snowdrops there is  not complete but I was inclined to stick with those I knew best rather than depend on what I had heard of read about.

Dunninald .. we had a great afternoon there, Sunday past. Some great plantings through the woodlands, long views through gaps and cleared spaces that lead your eye nicely .. some huge patches with large spaces between them. A good mix of forms and some very generous self-seeding in places.

http://dunninald.weebly.com/ (http://dunninald.weebly.com/)

Very welcoming vibe. Also, excellent soup, cakes, and very generous pot of tea. We felt that being charged £18,000 for tea, cake and soup for two was a bit steep, but recalculation brought the figure down to much more reasonable level.
Would post a pic but can't seem to get the file size down for some reason.

by dint of much crushing

I Went to Goldsborough Hall on Sunday (HG5 8NR)..an all together smaller event than Hodsock.. So it suited me! In the middle of 2906 you can see the sales table (which only sold snowdrops... and a good range, supplied by a nursery up Middlesbrough way), with the refreshments conservatory to the left.. In the garden they had clumps of about twenty different snowdrop cultivars, all labelled. The clumps looked like they’d been in for 4 or 5 years, but the combination of wind/light levels dissuaded me from taking any photos. Still; very interesting to see various plants in a garden setting. Hellebores and cyclamen were much less in evidence than at Hodsock, and I didn't see any snowflakes.... No kiddies play area either!!

To Welford Park Plant Fair today. Sunshine, carpets of snowdrops, and plant stalls (including snowdrops) set up on lawns with plenty of space, spaced-out visitors, barbecuing sausages, helpful unpressured stall holders - in fact a pleasurable experience and the complete opposite to the cattle market that is Myddleton House. And some uncommon snowdrops for sale such as Marlie Raphael and Prague Spring.

Cyril, do you know where the name 'Blue Trym' comes from? Is it for the color of the leaves?
Never heard of this one.

Lina.

Loved your pictures, Cyril. I do not think I will ever get there. It is always great to see other people's pictures then.

Thanks for posting the pictures. It's nice to see how they are progressing, even though i wasn't there this year.

Just a note to anybody that bought Galanthus'North Green Only' in 2013,It is the WRONG NAME,It's actualy 'Jubilee Green'.We don't want the same plant in circulation with two names. ??? ??? ???

Lina, the 'blue' is for the colour of the leaves, quite different compared with other 'Trym' type varieties.
It is on currently on ebay with 23 hrs to go.

The label in Margaret Owen's garden clearly had Byrkley, but in David Bromley's garden which we visited on Saturday, it was labelled Berkeley.  I assume it is one and the same.

Steve, the snowdrops were looking good.  I was there 2 years ago when I first met you and I think they looked better this time, despite the fact that every year many are lifted for selling.  One exception I noticed was Boyd's Double only had 1 flower this time.  Here is a picture taken 2 years ago.

Cyril you remembered :D .
Pity about 'Boyd's Double' .I thought Margaret had found the secret of how to grow this cultivar well.I guess it's just a frustrating plant to please.

But it is a very special one.

I think it is Cyril, my notes from Joe's talk at Blacksmith's snowdrop day in 2012:
Quote
Byrkley (pronounced as Berkeley), from Shropshire: a huge G. monostictus, with all parts being extremely large

I remember Margaret Owen told me the secret is it should be planted very deep but obviously it does not always perform.  For me it is the most desirable spiky snowdrop and still a holy grail.

It is wonderful that we all have differing tastes - I am constantly astonished at the number of people who seem to be captivated by spiky 'drops  - "desirable" is not a word I would ever use in a sentence with "spiky snowdrop". I  find them all hideous. :-X

Not only might there be some discounted snowdrops  ;) but other plants such as eranthis, cyclamen, erythronium pulmonaria, primula, scoliopus and other rarities.

Also selling will be John and Brenda Foster, Ben Potterton (Blacksmiths nursery), Tim Fuller (The Plantsmans Preference) and Andrew and Anita Thorp, so plenty of scope to spend some money 8)

"discounted" eh?  That's a SALE in my vocabulary! Yippee!

If there are Scoliopus I  commend them to anyone  dithering - they are delightful little plants.  And I expect you already know what the BD's position is on Erythroniums.......  8)
