I notice that Matt is also speaking at the Cottage Garden Society event

I was toying with the idea of going to both events but it's a long way from here to Colesbourne so I might be put-off if Matt is planning to give broadly the same talk at both events.  Does anyone know (or could Matt comment)?

Sorry for taking a while to get back to this one. I'm planning to do two different talks next year; one concentrating on new developments which I tend to update with each year's crop of new images, keeping in the odd favourite, and another on Freaks and variation in snowdrops. I will check which I'm doing where and post this shorlty.

And just a quick thank you to everyone who replied to my appeal for info last week!

Best wishes,

Matt

Welcome, Rudi!

I think we have enjoyed that video  from Germany in the past -  it is worth another look!

Some English details of the Nettetaler Day are here : http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=10892.msg287114#msg287114

A mecca for plant collectors : The Nettetaler Snowdrop Days 2014

The snowdrop days in Nettetal have for years been one of the first important dates of the school year . Renowned exhibitors from home and abroad of rare snowdrops, perennials and other garden plants and many more are there again to present  the snowdrops in  bloom. The experience of recent years has shown that there is no bad weather at this Mecca of the plant collector . Already the opening on Saturday was thronged by  the visitors last year, despite frigid temperatures. Reason enough there in 2014 for that: because this time the important British snowdrop garden centers will also be present to offer  their exquisite varieties.
For the first time, exhibitors will be in 2014 no longer to be found in front of the artists' café, but on the grounds of the country cafes »Go to Muhlenberg ." It is within easy walking distance to the previous venue. The Oirlicher flower garden and the extensive collection of Galanthus Marlu and Günter Waldorf will again be open to visitors during the event in 2014 .

An American snowdrop event....
On Saturday, March 8, at 11 am, Matt Bishop, principal author of Snowdrops: A Monograph of Cultivated Galanthus (the snowdrop "bible:), is presenting the annual Bank to Bend Lecture on snowdrops at Winterthur Garden and Museum in Delaware.  Admission of $20 for nonmembers/$10 for members includes a guided tour of Winterthur's famous March bank, one of the biggest displays of naturalized snowdrops in the U.S., and access to specialty nurseries selling snowdrops and other winter interest plants.  To register, call 302-888-4600, www.winterthur.org.

I highly encourage anyone who can to attend this event in order to hear forum member and snowdrop expert Matt Bishop speak, to tour this amazing garden, and to have access to the snowdrops and other winter interest plants for sale including those from my own nursery Carolyn's Shade Gardens.  For information on Winterthur and photos from the garden during last year's event when Alan Street spoke, go here: http://carolynsshadegardens.com/2013/06/22/winterthur-part-1-late-winter-2013/.

Yes, I was thinking that too, Emma.  But I also thought that the lack of complaints this year might be indicative of a waning popularity for the "Galanthus Gala" now that times are hard and there are more competing events.

The problem seems to be to find a new garden willing to open for so many people. It is easy to establish an event every year at the same place, but what makes the Gala the Gala is that it is every year at another place with a new garden to visit. But after so many years this is getting difficult.
And therefore only the Monksilver event should be called the Gala. They invented it!

The Gala is intended to take place on 15th February and I would be very surprised if it does not go ahead.  But I don't recall it ever being this late in the year with no letters of invitation received.

Hello Alan,
the journey from the " Germans-Galanthour 2014" goes to scotland and the gala is not mentioned. Until now, the "galanthour" always at the Gala. So my question.

Uwe, I presume Iris Ney, the organiser of the "Galanthour 2014" coach tour from Germany could tell you why she has decided to go to Scotland.  There are several venues in Scotland that would be logical choices for the Galanthus Gala but I'm not sure how far the majority of the regular Gala attendees who do not travel by coach would be prepared to venture.
Almost in Scotland.

The SRGC Early Bulb Day is on 15th February in Dunblane and there are a great many openings planned for the Scottish Snowdrop Festival :
http://www.visitscotland.com/see-do/events/scottish-snowdrop-festival

"As part of Homecoming Scotland, the 2014 Scottish Snowdrop Festival runs from 1 February to 16 March. It features at least 53 venues, many of which are free to visit, and between them they will display hundreds of varieties of this delicate white flower.

Snowdrops are very versatile and this is reflected in the regional spread of gardens and places taking part, from Arbriachan Garden Nursery which overlooks Loch Ness, to the historic grounds of Dryburgh Abbey in The Scottish Borders.

Many of the gardens are opening especially for the festival, including both private collections and places which are usually closed in winter. Growing in size each year, this year's festival includes eight new places to visit. Taking part for the first time are Rossie House and the town of Coupar Angus in Perthshire, Bruckhills Croft in Aberdeenshire, Brooklands and Craichlaw in Dumfries & Galloway, Lindores House in The Kingdom of Fife, Islay Estate in Argyll & The Isles and West Plean House in Loch Lomond, The Trossachs & The Forth Valley

Some venues, including the National Trust for Scotland property Greenbank Garden in Glasgow, offer the chance to warm up with a cup of tea and a snack once you’ve ambled around the garden, and even purchase bulbs and gifts. Look out for events at a number of locations, including gardener-led walks at Dunskey Gardens in Portpatrick, a weekend of arts, crafts and cycling in Couper Angus, and the annual Snowdrops by Starlight event at Cambo Estate in Fife. This evening spectacular amongst the snowdrop woodlands will invite you to don a head torch and be led through a magical glen of light featuring kinetic and sound sculptures!"

So there are plenty of things to tempt our German Galanthophile friends to visit Scotland - and who knows, a change may be as good as a rest!
