New crevice gardens

Hi to all, I posted some pictures in May, taken in Prague when we visited the most wonderful crevice gardens. We were so inspired that I came home a built a new crevice garden here. I will show several pictures a few at a time. I managed to find a local quarry with very interesting rock, the rock is basalt but it has veins of red green, greys and some good mixtures of colour. I had no sooner finished my construction here when Cyril decided he would like to build a really big crevice, I had used 2 tons rock and one ton of sharp sand soil mix for mine which I will show first. I will add pictures from start to finish of the new garden for Cyril and because the stone was more a mix of bigger sizes we came up with the name: it will be a Crockery- a hybrid between a crevice and a rockery. I will post pictures of Cyril's Crockery next week, cheers Ian the Christie kind.

Great to see the progress Ian !
Remember we saw the early beginnings when we passed back in May !
It will be most interesting to see how it develops.
Fascinating to hear that Cyril is starting up another Crevice garden - back in May he still had plenty of room left on his first one for additional planting...

I love the way it seems to be creeping out of and over the big troughs - it looks quite animated. I had a good chuckle at 'the crockery'!

I like the term "Crockery" too Anne. Ian and Cyril please forgive me but for a moment there I wondered if Scotland had had an earthquake.

Hi all, yes perhaps it looks like an earquake has struck and it was probably madness to build the crevice next to the glass house but if anyone could help me to move that monster trough then let me know. cheers Ian The Christie kind

Well here we go, I started to build Cyril's Crockery a month or so ago it is round the back of his house a banking around 7 meters long and 2.5 meters deep at an angle of 45% approx. At one end of this bed which had lots of trillium's, bulbs dwarf ,Rhodos, Hepatica's and lots more all were dug up and moved. I delivered 6 tons of rock in 3 separate loads all loaded and unloaded by hand. Cyril had 4 tons sharp sand delivered in 2 loads and he had a huge 700Lr pot with compost which was mixed with the sand. I will show the garden before we started and as we built the rocks the sand and compost mix was added to the banking to create different levels. Cyril and I filled up the crevices as we went along these will need more mix added now we have had rain, We do agree that Crockery should be the new name one it is a mix between crevice and Rockery, the stones being a mix of big and Small and for us well it nearly crocked us, pictures to follow a few at a time, cheers Ian the Christie kind.

Well, it is certainly a most impressive looking crockery.... I'll bet the plants will just love it.
Well done on all your hard work, Ian and Cyril.... more inspiration for others..... though my back is complaining a bit after just looking at all that heavy work....so I may leave it till later ....

Dear Maggie thanks very much for posting the pictures for me seems I missed the re-size of some must be more senior moments. I must say that I enjoyed working with that stone it has so many different colours and yes I am sure that the plants will love the mix of the sharp sand and compost. All the good soil under the rocks will help, I am sure some of the bigger plants will do very well. The structure is very long and at one end I built a Marle bed, Marle is local to here it is Limestone a relic from the last ice age (when I was at Primary school). It is like Tufa but very hard if fact I broke my big 15lb hammer trying to break some up. The Marle bed is around a large Acer which gives some shade and many of the Hepaticas and Ramondas were re-planted here. I will try and post the pictures a few at a time later, cheers Ian the Christie kind.
