NEWS FROM KENTUCKY
« on: August 04, 2012, 06:56:50 PM »
It is my great pleasure to inform all his friends in the alpine world that Alan Grainger (formerly of Manchester, England and now resident in Kentucky, USA has been awarded the status of Colonel for his services to employment issues in this beautiful State. Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, was not a military person. The commission of Colonel was awarded to him by the Governor of Kentucky. The title "Kentucky Colonel" is the highest title of honor bestowed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the title was also bestowed on Winston Churchill, Pope John xxiii, Muhammed Ali, Ronald Reagan amongst others. A person cannot apply for the title, they have to be nominated by a current Colonel and testimonials have to be written to illustrate their worth as members of society, and their involvement in the community, industry or politics.
So why am I telling you all this? Well yesterday, Judge Buzz Carloftis (himself a Kentucky Colonel) and Judge Executive of Rockcastle County, who Alan has been working closely with to bring employment back to the County since Plasticware closed down, presented Alan with his commission as a Kentucky Colonel, signed by the Governor of Kentucky and the Secretary of State for Kentucky.
Is that cool or what?

Well done Alan, not bad for a "Lankie Manc". Hope it doesn't mean you have to dye your hair white and grow a beard and moustache as well!

Boys! Our chum has been graciously honoured, behave yourselves!

More than "cool" - that's just super!
A very exciting thing to be chosen for such an honour and I do not doubt very well deserved by Colonel Grainger, a man well known to be a most capable and competant chap.

We here know of his work with the AGS East Lancs group and with the creation of the first famous alpine plant website, "The Alpine Garden".

No surprise then, that he has impressed in Kentucky with his attention to employment matters there, to help others.
Well done, Alan,  many congratulations to Kentucky's newest Colonel!

Consider yourself reprimanded, Mr Nicholson ... have him tarred and feathered, Maggi.

If there's tar and feathers flying around be careful not to get any on Alan's testimonials :o

You folks  are impossible, this is a serious matter. :-X
Perhaps we can appease your cavalier comments by getting the new Colonel something to commemorate his elevation to his new status .... I found this, what do you think?

Oh dear, this is too amusing - but I have a distinct feeling that we have all been struck off the Grainger Christmas card list..... :-\ :-[

Facebook has a lot to answer for. I was hoping to keep this ' relatively' quiet. It's not a big deal but something I was honored to be a recipient of and something I had coveted but never dreamed of receiving. Nick Holmes ( my dear step-son) is also a KC so that's two in the same family. It's gratifying however to have one's efforts for other people be acknowledged.

The Honorable Order of Colonels are a wonderful (non-profit organization) who do much charity work throughout the world for the under-privileged, so again, I am honored to be a small part of that work.

Dave, I already have the white beard and the moustache *LOL*....and the Christmas Cards are safe Maggi.

Appreciate your comments both serious and humorous...........but I'm NOT wearing a white suit and changing my avatar for anyone!!!!!

I'm still not sure if Cliff's original post is some kind of send up but if so, I can't see the punchline so maybe it's genuine in which case Alan, hearty congratulations. Not sure I'd want to be in the same company as Ronald Reagan but guess you can't pick and choose.
