Opening PDF files in Firefox
« on: April 04, 2012, 02:28:05 PM »
I understand that a small number of people have been unable to open the Bulb Log or other PDF documents.
The first thing to do is make sure that you have an up to date version of Adobe Reader – there is a link to down load this on the index pages.
Others simply cannot open it in their web browser: you can still download the file then double click it to open it in your Adobe reading software.
It is much more convenient to have it open directly in your browser so I have listed, below, the simple changes you need to make.

Opening Bulb Log or other PDF in Firefox
Click Tools at the top of the page choose Options
Another window will open; select Applications
This should open a list of applications associated with the browser
Click to highlight  Adobe Acrobat Document then click the drop down arrow on the right in the Action column. then select Use Adobe Acrobat (in FireFox)
Last click OK at the bottom of the box and that should be it.

Ian - I'm using Firefox 3.6.28 on Mac OS10. 4.11  & have to download files in order to open them - not a great inconvenience. I've followed your suggestion & this is what I get with 'Tools' - no sign of 'Options'.

You could open Help and search for Options?

Ian's gone for a swim... and what he and I know about Macs could be written on the head of a pin!

Gerry, is there a "Network" tab? there may be a choice of actions which includes "applications"  in that....

This is a grab of a section on the Firefox link above: hmmm, sorry, pic not loading.  :'(

Gerry - I have Windows & Firefox at work and can't open the Bulblog though I can open pdfs.  I just switch to the dreaded W. Internet Explorer to open the Bulblog but have to be careful as IE always asks if I want to make it my default browser.  No such problem with Safari on my Mac at home.  So one can presume Firefox is the problem. Why not use Safari?

Maggi - on Macs (as far as I can determine) the equivalent of  'Options' seems to be under 'Applications' in 'Firefox  Preferences'.

Thanks John I'll try 'Safari' - haven't used it for ages

Edit: I've just done it with 'Firefox'. It asks what I want to do first.

Excellent to hear you've got that sorted Gerry.
Good tips too, John.
