too late for good sloes this year most are whizzened, check spelling, mummies but did get enough to make about 4 or 6 litres.

I changed my age to 21! that's my mental age or less if you ask the staff at work. And that's quite a good question for everyone.

How old does your mind/brain think it is?

It's already past the right day here, but I do wish a very happy birthday to Jozef, Mark and Peter, from Forumists in New Zealand. We know the day (as do the Brits) as Guy Fawkes Day when, in typically English fashion, we celebrate an event that never happened, the blowing up of the English Houses of Parliament. Nowadays, we just scare our friends, neighbours and pets with Chinese-made fireworks. Very pretty but dangerous and it's likely that in future they will no longer be able to be bought by the public but we'll have only big, municipal events instead. Common sense really, in view of the injuries that many people and animals sustain.

Today (the 6th) is a down under day, the only thing on many people's minds being the running of the Melbourne Cup. I'm not remotely interested in horse racing but NZ in general comes to a standstill for the event and in Australia there's a national holiday.

....No wonder you're a bit down under Lesley....what with the rugby league series results 'n'all?  Perhaps one of those wee jockeys can restore some national pride...?

O.K. , O.K.,  ...... I will go and bury my head in a kea's burrow.

Well I wasn't going to mention the league matches. Not surprised that you did though Cliff. Now it only remains for the Aussies to wallop our much vaunted netball team in the next week or so (as they are fully expected to do) and I'll be able to tell friends, family and workmates to go and get a life. Thank God for plants!

As for keas, do they HAVE burrows? Perhaps you're thinking of shearwaters (muttonbirds).

Keas build nests, according to a book I have on NZ birds.  They may take years to build them usually in hollows on the ground.

We might have a chance with the netball World Cup.......    maybe ;D

According to Wikipedia...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kea

"Nest sites are usually positioned on the ground underneath large beech trees, in rock crevices or dug burrows between roots. They are accessed by tunnels leading back 1m to 6m into a larger chamber, which is furnished with lichens, moss, ferns and rotting wood. The laying period starts in January and reaches into July. 2-4 white eggs are laid, with an incubation time of around 21 days."

Oh well, that's definitely the right place for Cliff's head. ;D

Funny thing is Susan, I don't really CARE about the netball.

Lesley,

Apparently it is only a public holiday in some states of Australia.  Victoria and the ACT are the only ones I know of.  I'd assumed that NSW had it as well but apparently not.  Why they gave us here in the ACT a public holiday when NSW doesn't have it (for those who don't realise, the ACT is a small territory that contains the national capital and is surrounded by NSW) I'll never know.

Personally, I find it embarrassing that a 20 minutes horse race causes a public holiday.  "The Race that stops a nation", as it is commonly called, certainly doesn't say much in the way of good things about Australia, does it?  I'm with you and really couldn't care less who wins and who doesn't.  I won't be watching it and will be thankful when it is over.  Now if we could just get past our national elections I'd be very much relieved as well.  It's amazing how much rubbish they can pack into an election campaigns..... I just can't believe anyone is stupid enough to believe any of it!!  :o
Cheers.

Hi Maggi,

Thanks for the birthday wishes and card.
I had a normal workday (24 hours) in the fire station. I am sorry for my absence here on the forum last half a year (I was too busy).

Belated birthday greetings to Mark, Peter and Jozef,
Yes, we had a holiday yesterday for a horse-race, but at least it gave me a chance to take a pic of some ixias with their flowers OPEN in the middle of the day!(see the South African Bulbs thread). Actually the town where I work, Kyneton, has its holiday today, for the Kyneton Cup! But our work has a centre in a nearby town which celebrates the Melbourne Cup. So the powers that be ordained that we take the Tuesday as a Public Holiday and today (Wednesday) as a in-service day! Anyway, sorry I wasn't at the computer yesterday to join in with the others in wishing the 3 birthday boyz - all of whom I'm honoured to have met in person in May while in Europe!
cheers
