Thanks for the birthday wishes.  I was already born 48 years ago in England, but here in the USA I still have 1 1/2 hours to go before I put in an appearance.

I'm celebrating my birthday by having 8 tons of soil/sand mix delivered - and it all has to be moved by the middle of the afternoon so we can use the driveway.  Good for upper body strength!

I should have said Calycanthus germinate quickly and easily and I have had flowers on good sized bushes only 3 years after sowing.  Make sure they get planted out as soon as possible.  The seed pods also are fantastic in pot pourri - the scent is amazing and long-lived (I can't believe I just said that - flower arranging must be just around the corner ).  The scent of the flowers varies from plant to plant - some are much nicer than others.  Fall color is glorious - I have them planted close to Hydrangea quercifolia (another stunning shrub for year-round value) and the purple-red-burgundy of the Hydrangea looks awesome against the bright yellow-gold of the allspice.  The Hydrangea seeds around in the garden.

There are some new hybrids between Calycanthus and Sinocalycanthus - look out for Hartlage Wine and Venus - just unbelievable. Athens is the yellow selection of C. floridus.

Retirement is great -  but I haven't got anything like the time I expected to have. I seem to be very busy, day after day. Home improvements are now in full swing and . . I can actually be IN when tradesmen call.

24th & 25th here have been beautiful days of sunshine. Has the weather been good with you, too?
