Happy Birthday John!!  Many happy returns and all that!!  ;D  And I've got the right day as well, because it should be around 1am on the 18th where you are at the moment.
Cheers.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.  I was already born 48 years ago in England, but here in the USA I still have 1 1/2 hours to go before I put in an appearance.

Not sure what you mean by the gardening year winding down :-\

I'm celebrating my birthday by having 8 tons of soil/sand mix delivered - and it all has to be moved by the middle of the afternoon so we can use the driveway.  Good for upper body strength!

Best,

Maggi,

Has anyone ever told you you have a one-track mind?  There is more to birthdays than cake you know....... there's presents!!  ;D
Cheers.

If anyone (except Lesley, who is special ;D) wants seeds from Calycanthus floridus then please send me an a self-addressed padded envelope and enough cash (£2 or $4) to cover return postage.  They are ripe now.

I should have said Calycanthus germinate quickly and easily and I have had flowers on good sized bushes only 3 years after sowing.  Make sure they get planted out as soon as possible.  The seed pods also are fantastic in pot pourri - the scent is amazing and long-lived (I can't believe I just said that - flower arranging must be just around the corner ::)).  The scent of the flowers varies from plant to plant - some are much nicer than others.  Fall color is glorious - I have them planted close to Hydrangea quercifolia (another stunning shrub for year-round value) and the purple-red-burgundy of the Hydrangea looks awesome against the bright yellow-gold of the allspice.  The Hydrangea seeds around in the garden.

You can see a few pictures at http://tinyurl.com/2bhb8w

There are some new hybrids between Calycanthus and Sinocalycanthus - look out for Hartlage Wine and Venus - just unbelievable. Athens is the yellow selection of C. floridus.

Happy Birthday  Wishes to Jim McKenney in Maryland, who will be celebrating his birthday today with some really good food, unless I am very much mistaken. Good food looms large in the McKenney household.... sensible folks these residents of Montgomery County! Hope there is some cake left over for Biscuit the Dog  ;)

Thanks Maggi and thanks, too, for the lovely animated card - it was fun and a nice idea!! ;D
Retirement is great -  but I haven't got anything like the time I expected to have. I seem to be very busy, day after day. Home improvements are now in full swing and . . I can actually be IN when tradesmen call.

24th & 25th here have been beautiful days of sunshine. Has the weather been good with you, too?

Lovely bright day here, Heather, though with a chill breeze out of the sun. Certainly autumnal here.... great weather for you pottering outdoors while waiting for your tradesmen, I'm sure.

It looks like it's the week for birthdays if your name is Mark.

Today it is Mark Griffiths, Happy Birthday Mark.

On Saturday there is another one, anybody know him ?
