Petunia patagonica
« on: January 17, 2012, 06:54:39 AM »
I happened to encounter a picture of Petunia patagonica and I fell in love with this plant!

Before this, the only petunia that I knew was an annual plant that everyone used for hanging baskets. When I saw the pictures of patagonica, I was stunned. :o  Does anyone have an idea where I could purchase some seed? Assuming it's not restricted, I would love to give it a try...

It's South American isn't it? I'm sure it appeared once or twice in the fabulous Flores and Watson collections or Pern and Watson. John Watson anyway. Probably best bet would be that company that sells Chilean seed.

While the show plants are nice, the colour  (and size) of the one shown from Cliff's link
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/stationalpinejosephfourier/3077117658/    ( direct link saves you waiting for the whole page to load)   is something quite  "other"... yummy plant!

Here are some pictures from the Santa Cruz Province in December 2011. It is very different how much Petunia patagonica flower every year. There were not many in bloom this season but we found a few.

Thanks, everyone, for your pictures and links! I've been drooling over all of them; while I'm waiting for a reply from a Chilean company (thanks for the suggestion,  Lesley!) I was wondering if anyone knew of any other places where these seeds might potentially be available...

It's just cruel when you should be out weeding to be tantalised by all these amazing images on Cliff's link! Some of these cushion species are astonishing and presumably of a very great age.
