Regarding  the begonia it is hardy. We have it outside in East Lothian and friends have it outside in Midlothian; Glasgow Botanics  probably still have it in one of their borders. It dies down in winter so mark the place where it is growing. It readily produces bulbils in the leaf axils which can be used to increase your stock.  In one of the few recent  books on the genus Mark Tebbitt notes it growing  in the USA down to at least -7 C. It comes from China where it is said to grow as far north as Beijing and is traditionally  associated with forsaken love! There are white and pink flower forms in cultivation. It does best in semi shade eg in woodland conditions. The sub specific name evansiana, though still often seen -it is on the RHS  website - is no longer valid according to to Tebbitt (Begonias, Timber Press, 2005, pp. 138-141 ).

We have the Margyricarpus here as M. setosus. I'm pretty sure from the image that it is the same plant. The little pearl-like fruit are very pretty and the whole plant, being evergreen and glossy is attractive all year round. My present plant is less than 20cms across but I've seen plants close to 2 metres!

I do like Gentiana 'Gowrie.' I love all those pale blue gentians.
