South West AGS Show

The South West AGS Show is on Saturday 26 March in Exeter. Anyone likely to be venturing down here to the end of the known world?

Sadly not, it is too far for us. When my Mother lived in Minehead we used to stay with her on the Friday night, carry on down to Exeter on the Saturday. Spend all day at the show (sold plants in those days to pay for the petrol!) and then drove all the way home on Saturday evening. Hope the show is as successful as it can be for you.

Some of you lot have been keeping secrets from me!

There I was doing a stint on the Plant Stall at today's Show when I looked up to serve the next customer. I know that face I thought! It can't be! Yes it can, it's Luc! And it was, and closely followed by LucS-the Channel Hoppers in person and accompanied by Kurt Vickery. Wonderful and what a surprise. My duties didn't give a lot of time off but we did get a chance to have a chat just before they were to shoot off to get back to Dover for the ferry tonight. ;D

Wonderful Show, managed a couple of seconds that might have been firsts if the Show had been last week (vanity!). Lots of people, lots of plants. The Farrer Medal was won by Cyril Dart of Taunton with a magnificent Draba. Now, when I take Show pics (and I'm no Jon Evans!) I normally take a pic of the label at the same time I take the plant-but this time I didn't and I can't for the life of me remember it. So, unless anyone can name it you'l have to look at Jon's pics on the AGS Site. Sorry.

More pics tomorrow. David's tired , been on his pins all day ::)

First batch of images from yesterdays Show.

Firstly I can clarify that Cyril Dart's Farrer winning plant was Draba longisliqua.

First one is a nice pot of Narcissus bulbocodium ssp obesus benched by my friend Mike Quest (who lurks on here and one of these days I'll get him to post!) that won him the one bulbous plant class in Section C and also the Otter Trophy for the best plant in Section C. He will henceforth be renamed "Mike (of course, I'll have nothing to show) Quest.

Dionysia brioides 'Woodside' and D. aretiodes exhibited by Chas and Rita Carter which got a First in Class 5.

A shot of the six pan which got a First for Lee and Julie Martin in Class 1. Note the lewisia tweedyi at the back in full flower. How do they do it??

Again for Lee and Julie Martin, a First in Class 62 with Fritillaria amana.

Three pans of frits (sorry no names) which brought a First for Ian Robertson in Class 61.

Iris graeberiana grown to perfection by Ivor Betteridge

Also by Ivor Betteridge a First in Class 55 with Corydalis solida ssp incisor alba CH 821

Iris acutiloba ssp lineolata part of a three pan which gained a third for Bill Squire in Class 59

The first three are of a three pan that got a Second for Tony Bennett in Class 59: Iris cristata, I chamaeiris lutea, I bucharica.

One for Anne Wright next. Narcissus 'Jim Lad' grown to absolute perfection by Ivor Betteridge for a Second in Class 64.

Narcissus palearensis exhibited by Bob and Rannveig Wallis. I must look this one up.

Narcissus johnstonii got a Second for Bill Squire in Class 63. I must look that one up as well.

Dionysia 'Eric Watson' got a First for Petter Summers in Class 99

Narcissus cordubensis x watieri exhibited by Bob and Rannveig Wallis.

Primula 'Broadwell Milkmaid' by Peter Summers which got a First in Class 85

Pleione 'Tongariro' by Dorothy Sample took First in Class 19

Cyclamen coum album sown 2/10/2009 took First in Class 11 for Ian Robertson

Primula 'Jackie Richards' from the doyen of Primula growers, David Philby, took First in Class 8

Miniature garden from Mavius and Sam Lloyd took first in Class 39
