Converters (length, temperature etc.)
« on: February 22, 2011, 02:52:43 AM »
Howdy All,

Not sure whether these would be of interest or not, but thought for those who have trouble with the temperature and size conversions....

Temperature conversions...... http://www.onlineconversion.com/temperature.htm

Currency conversions..... http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic?user=onlineconversion&lang=en

Length conversions..... http://www.onlineconversion.com/length_common.htm

I find these three very useful if needed to convert oF to oC, between foreign currencies and from cm to inches etc if I can't work it out in my head.  :-\

If this would be better put somewhere else, feel free to move it.  I just though a topic that has the various conversion methods in it (and can be added to by people so that as more are needed/better ones are found) they can be included here.  8)

I hope this is useful.

There are some very useful widgets available if you Google search 'conversion widgets'.
I have one on my desktop that I have used for at least two years. It converts area, volume, temperature, currency, energy, time, length, weight, speed, pressure and power....all on the same widget. Accuracy has been criticized by some people but hey, unless you're working to the Nth degree, they are OK. (Probably good to 6 decimal places).
If you need more accuracy then you need a scientific calculator and not a unit converter. Horses for courses.

Invaluable.

Tony - That's okay for you young bucks. ;)

Nick -  Which converter widget are you using?  Just downloaded the Pemdas calculator and Velaclock Deluxe widgets last night. The Vela is a trial but pretty cool. 8)  Too many widgets, so little time.

My brain would bleed Tony! With temperature I just remember 16oC (which is for Celsius not centigrade) is 61oF and 28oC is 82oF and 10oC is 50oF and the others are somewhere in between! 8) Last week we hired a mobile home (from a company called "Just Go") from a nice man in North Shore who worked last year in Tiso's in Stirling (his girlfriend was at "Stirling Uni." at the time). The vehicle was British so worked in miles per hour. Fortunately km were visible on the dial (unlike the digital one on our Renault which was useless on our tours through Europe) but the tachometer was in miles, so distances were needed to be calculated. Luckily we had a satnav and the lovely Serena kept us right. ::)

As a long time occasional lurker, a more recent forum member (and frequent lurker), I never thought this would be my first post, but...

A most excellent (and miniscule footprint) converter can be downloaded here:
http://www.tm-research.com/products/dmcc/desktop-metric-conversion-calculator.html

The file is only 4KB(!), and so it is the absolute best for anyone using an "ancient" computer or one that is slow, as it computes the quickest.  No frills, but an easy interface with twelve different conversions.

Thanks Rick.  At 4K that would certainly be an easy download for anyone, and sounds perfect for a lot of people. 8)

I just type, for example, "2 grams in ounces" in Google and the result is displayed above the usual list of web pages found.
