Michael, your speciosus 'Oxonian' doesn't look dark enough to be the real thing. There's a lot of 'Oxonian' being sold which isn't correct. Janis showed the real thing in an earlier post in this thread. Does yours have a dark flower tube like Janis's? That's a major identifying feature for true 'Oxonian'. Apart from Janis, Paul Christian also sells correct ' Oxonian'.

Martin I had my suspicions, that is why I put a question mark after it. I will check tomorrow but I am fairly confident  that is not Oxonian.

A few years ago I bought all of the speciosus cultivars and what a waste it was!

Oh Janis that`s interesting. Here is Zone 6b. Last winter we had temperatures under -27°C (but only for a time of 7 days). No problem for cb. I never saw the original habitats in Romania - but I feel the coldness there. Thanks for your advice.
With a last pic of today.

Excellent form of banaticus! I haven't bicolored banaticus. Problem is not so much in coldness although below minus 30 is not exceptional here (only few last winters were milder, but usually every winter we have one-two weeks with temperatures around minus 30 C). There are two problem factors: 1) not allways bulbs are covered with sufficient amount of snow; 2) weather in winter frequently changes from minus to plus Centigrade and just this is the most dangerous. In Eastern Carpathians which is N and E border of banaticus distribution range mountains are covered with very deep snow throughout winter - I saw even 1 m deep snow and this protects against any frost. Winter is very stable there, too. Similar seem to be in Roumania, too. The same are with plants from Siberia and far East. Some of them (Cardiocrinum etc.) overwinter in unfrozen soil covered by 1-2 meters of snow when temperature falls well below minus 30 C.

Hagen - I've never seen a bicoloured form of C. banaticus before, it's beautiful. Where did it come from?
Gerry passed away  at home  on 25th February 2021 - his posts are  left  in the  forum in memory of him.

Martin, checked the flower this morning and it is  not Oxonian. I don't think any of my Speciosus forms are correctly named. I will have to try them from a reliable seed source.

Michael - freom seed you will not grow named cultivar. You must buy the corm of true named cultivar. I can help you (next season) with Artabir and Albus, Oxonian I have only one pot.

Dirk,
Is Crocus mathewii rosea from P. Ch.? He offered such name this season. As he don't sell plants to me, I'm using my friends help for getting some things offered in his catalogue but I suppose it was very short in corms as my friend didn't receive this one between others. In any case it is very nice, excellent form, may be not so exceptional as cv. 'Brian Mathew', but beautifull.
