Ranzania japonica, anyone?
« on: May 11, 2009, 01:20:50 AM »
I've sown endless packets of this from the exchanges over a 25 year period, with never a single germination. Remarks by growers of this plant say it must be sown absolutely fresh. If anyone has seed on their plant this year, I would be very grateful for a packet of it fresh.

I have been sent VERY fresh seed by Ian Christie - no germination - and by Gote in Sweden, twice - 1 seedling - which lasted a full year then didn't come up the second.

I have sent out Ranzania seed to a fair number of people. Some of them report good germination, some report failure. I send them in the berry as far as possible since this should be as close to immediately as one can get.
Those who report success usually have sown immediately, kept them at room temperature for a few months and then chilled them outside - the typical woodland seed regime.
I assume that you two should get into the waiting list for this year's harvest.  ;D Mail me later - around July first.
It seems that these seeds do not take kindly to drying out or waiting.

You are very generous Gote and if you are willing to let me have a little more seed, I'll be in touch in a few weeks. It may be that in my reversed climate I did things wrong. They were certainly sown fresh, but into cold weather.
