Saponaria(?) ID please?
« on: March 03, 2009, 03:00:51 AM »
Hello,
I have just joined SRGC and am enjoying this forum immensely!
Also, I have long been bothered by a mystery plant, a Saponaria of some nature, I think, but I wonder which?  Could anyone put me on the right track?  After about 10 years, the plant has reached ~20 cm in diameter.  I hope the photos are clear enough, but if not, please ask questions about the details and I'll try to answer.  (I had a vague notion that it might be S. suendermannii based on one fuzzy photo on the internet...?)
Thank you,
Lori Skulski

P. S. This is my first attempt at posting photos here, so it's a shot in the dark... may have to try again.

I think your ID of Saponaria suendermannii is correct.... try a look at the website of Forumist Magnar Aspaker to seehis photo....

Thank you very much, Maggi!  You know, I have a sneaking suspicion that that's the same photo I found by googling "saponaria" and doggedly working my way out to around page 100 or so!  :)  Anyway, glad to see that someone else sees a likeness there!
To be even more sure, it would nice to find a description for S. suendermanii, but I've had no luck in that.  Can anyone suggest where I might find one?

Thank you, Luc - I did try to collect seeds last year but messed it up somehow; will attempt again this year, and hope I will succeed, in case the plant is of interest to anyone!
Regards,
Lori

Mmm, yes, I see what you mean.... I cannot find a description, or even a mention, in my books.
I have faith in Magnar, so  I respect his naming... perhaps an email to him might help?

If you really want to be sure,
Why do you not ask the Sündermanns. They are running the nursery in the 3rd or 4th generation.

In Lindau. Aesacher Ufer.
Lindau is a smallish town on the Bodensee lake. Switzerland is on the other side. nearest airpotr is probably (Ryanair) Friedrichshafen but it is really a place where you need a car. Try Google earth "Lindau Alpengarten"

Just to let anyone know who may be interested, I sent the same photos as posted here to Magnar Aspaker and requested his opinion.  He very kindly responded, and said that it appeared to be S. suendermannii.
Thank you for the advice, Maggi.
