Alplains seed list is now on the web although I haven't recieved my paper copy yet.
Lots of interesting seed especially for the drier garden, plent of cacti for you lovers of prickly things out there.

The seed always germinates well but since a lot of the plants come from Arizona, Utah, Colorado and new Mexico they don't often last long in Scotland. Don't know why  Maybe our central European and Mediterranean members might be more successful in getting them to flowering size and beyond.

First of all, Welcome Helen to this wonderful forum--nice to see friends from the Clematis group here----I am sure I am biased, but I do love this SRGC gang of international gardening stars!!!!

Alplains was always my favorite seed source in my early gardening days---but the past few years I've restricted my purchases from Alan to Clematis, barrel cacti and a few of the species with a wider distribution outside of western North America. One discovers over time that the majority of the western species do not like it here in the east.

These days I am concentrating more on uncommon natives of eastern USA---many of which superficially *appear* to be out of hardiness range for me---but have surprised me time and time again (even natives of the very far south-east).

I only wish there were someone doing collecting in those areas.

Firstly let me say how much I enjoyed your pics and text in your little bit of heaven thread, when I thought, well that must be it, another post with more beautiful plants.
I also like your winter avatar.
My order from Alplains was mostly violas, I hope they do ok for me, I love them so much.
Also couldn't resist some Houstonia acerosa , once I saw they are fragrant.
I have some Houstonia caerulea that are starting to grow into nice sized clumps, so am hoping these will do ok for me to.
Am wondering why bluet seed isn't more readily available.
As for this forum, I have to confess to being hugely entertained each time I have logged in.

I received my most recent Alplains order last week. I've got Buddleja utahensis, Maihuenia poeppigii, Pelargonium endlicherianum, Scrophularia macrantha and Yucca nana. It was difficult to narrow it down to just these! Those desert Amsonia are especially tempting...

This might be the place, James to admit your current fever with Lardizabalaceae and to ask if any of the forum members might be able to send you seeds of that elusive Diospyros rhombifolia you yearn for

Yes, I've tried a few of those yummy desert Amsonias of Allan's over the years---they also did not like my garden!!! The Maihenia, on the other hand has loved it here!!!

I created this account last year, but I've barely used it. No longer.

I will take you up on your suggestions. This forum is a really wonderful resource.

Maihuenia is supposed to be one of the best hardy cactus for the Midwest. It not only tolerates winter moisture, but seems to require it somewhat. I can't wait!
