No, longer Cliff, by one letter. ;D Ornithogalum adseptentrionesvergentulum.

And you can have one for only £41.50 plus postage of course! It makes some galanthus look a bargain.

You'd certainly need a long label!

But than you might hide the plant behind it...

"Isn't there a South African species with a name as long as your arm?"

It's O. longibracteatum (well known before as O. caudatum "the green onion"). It is evergreen and flowers small and mostly green but when grown in a wide, flat pan, the way the long cock tail feathers' like leaves make a great show. Typical of this species is the jade green bulbs that grow mostly out of the ground. Also known as the "pregnant onion".

Thank you for the Id Oron. Your picture shows my plant better than my picture does.

I am glad that Ornithogalum gets some prominence at last.
They DO show more diversity than Galanthus does. (Sorry  :) )
The "weed" O nutans is not really winter hardy here so it does not become a weed in my garden.
I find its greyish flowers very attractive.

We have greenfinches here and chaffinches and goldfinches but I've never seen a thirtythreeandahal finch :)

I think Arthur's pic looks right for Otto's super plant, including the visible foliage. The flower shape, size and colouring are right too. Otto's was about 30cms in height as I recall and remembering that it was in HIS garden, where everything grows well and healthily it would likely be more robust and floral than in the wild, for sure.

We don't see them as a rule, Lesley ... and if we do then they don't quite make our yard!    :)
