Book sources in Turkey
« on: September 05, 2008, 11:57:11 PM »
As my daughter Thea is heading to Antalya in Turkey this coming weekend I thought I might get her off the beach and into a book shop to look for some plant books (bulbs, native, rhizome plants) - any good books (doesn't matter if the text is in another language) that I should get her to look out for - Any book sources that anyone knows about?

Pat - one of the classic (illustrated) books in English is/was 'The Bulbous Plants of Turkey' by Turhan Baytop & Brian Mathew. Baytop (of Crocus baytopiorum fame) was professor at the University of Istanbul though I don't know whether the book was ever published in Turkish or was even available there.

Dont we all!?

Yesterday I was very sad to see that my white Colchicum kesselringii that came with ordinary kesselringii bulbs I bought this time last year had died. There were many small maggots eating it so it may not have been my fault

I have done a google search for the book: The Bulbous Plants of Turkey by Turham and Mathew but they are all fairly expensive. Just wondering if I could put a Wanted add in the SRGS publications - there might be a member who has a copy that they do not need anymore and is willing to sell to a keen grower for not quite as much as the book shops are asking.

Pat, this posting is probably the best way of reaching members who might have this book available.
Alternatively, you could try e-mailing the SRGC secretary, Carol Shaw of the Forum, and asking her to put a note in the next 'Secretary's Pages' for you although these will not come out until Jan/Feb.

Thanks David. I am in no great hurry so I will contact Carol (is she your wife or related??) as there are possibly many members who are not on the internet.

Pat , I value my copy of 'The Bulbous Plants of Turkey' by Prof. Turham & Mathew too much to part with it, however there is a recent [2007] Photographic Guide by Peter Sheasby , of the Bulbous Plants of Turkey and Iran, published by THe Alpine Garden Soc. , at a reasonable price, and available from their Bookstore , lots of Iris photos!
    Ciao Otto.

Pat,

Be warned, that book recommended by Otto is dangerous.  I got mine locally when Florilegium had a stall at a local plant day last year..... picked it up to have a look at it and just HAD to buy it.  Oh the irises!!!!!  :o ::)
Cheers.
