Difference between Soldanella montana and hungarica.
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:19:47 PM »
Could you help me solve that never ending search? For few years now, I was trying to find a description of difference between S. montana and hungarica. I simply have no idea how to tell which is which. I have found some surely not S. carpatica in Tatra Mountains, but I couldn't tell if it was S. montana or hungarica. The only thing I found is that the difference between these both Soldanella and S. carpatica is in the size of their leaves. The first two have much bigger ones. But I am in dead end in telling how to differentiate one from another. I have found several photos on the internet, but no one could show me a feature that would definitely tell that this one is that and that one is another. I hope you can help me.
Best regards,

I hope you'll forgive me if this comment seems beneath contempt, but with these two species, does it really matter?

Cephalotus - If you simply must, have fun with this!

I can send directly to you if it's unreadable.

Heheh. :D Lesley, I really have to know that. Firstly, because it won't let me live peacefully without that knowledge. Secondly, it is because in my country are three Soldanella species: carpatica montana and hungarica. It is not about collecting them and have a bigger list and two species, that are impossible to differentiate. I simply want to know how anybody can tell that this is Soldanella hungarica and that is montana is they are so similar.

Last time I was trying to find difference between Pinguicula bohemica and P. vulgaris ssp. bicolor. I found the information, that there is no difference between them, only with the genes. First one have less number of them than the second one.

Or lets make it different. It is said that Crocus scepusiensis and C. neapolitanus are the same species of Crocus vernus. But they are so different in colours. This is really incomprehensible for me.

Thanks John for that text, I hope it will help. :)

I do know what you mean, and understand of course. I used to be the same but I guess I'm so old now that I'm getting over it. :)
