Computer Problems and\or Advice 2008 to 2011
« on: August 13, 2008, 07:34:42 PM »
In case anyone has Emailed me at my private Email address since yesterday and I haven't responded I will not yet have received the mail. Seemingly there is a technical problem with my Internet Service Provider and this will not be sorted before Friday.

I am still able to download Forum mail and to receive PM's.

These kind of things never happened with the quill pen, now, where can I find a goose at this time of night!

What I would like to be able to do is, for example, look at a Crocus picture from the current Crocus thread, and, whilst it is on my screen bring up another picture say, from TonyG's Crocus Pages, and be able to see both pictures at the same time, on my screen, for easier comparison.

Is this possible, and how do I achieve it please, my operating system is Windows XP Home Edition? Any help gratefully accepted but should preferably be in words no longer than two syllables and in simple English not 'Techie Speak' ;D

Very easy David. Open the Crocus page on SRGC web site and open a new page to look at the Crocus pages web site. At the top left of the pages, where you would close it using the red X, click the middle button that has the two squares. This will reduce both pages that you can manouver side by side

David,

Perhaps if you opened Internet Explorer twice. I don't mean two tabs within the same one opening of the programme but to open the programme twice separately then open the crocus thread in one and Tony's crocus pictures on the other using the resize button on the top right of your screen so that both photos are visible at the same time.

Mark's method isn't working for me as I had several windows open on the one browser.... it does better using Paddy's tip to open the second window in new browser click.

when I want to closely compare two pix I open ACDsee and copy the m to there, where it is easier to get them the same size to compare .....that is rather fiddly, though. :-\

Mark's idea doesn't work for me either one page 'overplants' (if you see what I mean!) the other and I cant separate them. Maybe I did it wrong! Haven't tried Paddy's idea yet.

Will have leave this until tomorrow, two chaps have arrived to take me for a pint or three and they are champing at the bit ;D

Of course mine works. Left click and hold the button down on the top tool bar. You can then reposition the pages as you like

An easier alternative to clicking on the toggle icon in the top right hand of the window title to toggle between the window filling the screen and being smaller is to double click on the title bar

Once the window does not fill the screen you can resize it dragging the bottom right hand corner resize icon, or by dragging any of the four sides.

To extract pictures from web pages (so you can get them in other programs) right click on the picture and use the menu options that appear - handy for magnifying images.

Now, if all you people got Macs you would find it obvious  how to open 2 web pages side by side. I've just done it purely intuitively. Macs are made for idiots with intuition. After all, Microsoft is said to have  pinched most of Windows from Apple & just made it more complicated.

Mark,

I've not tried any of these, but keep in mind that different settings on different computers may mean that what works for one person doesn't work for another.  It may work for Mark and not for Maggi, through no fault of her own because the settings for the web browser are different.  ::)

Gerry,

I'm not sure you meant to phrase it quite like that..... you've just implied you're an idiot with intuition!  :P ;)
Cheers.

Paul - I am. And my intuition is fairly limited.
