Hepatica americana from northern Minnesota, USA. Can you guess what the mulch is? (Attachment Link) This is at the base of a Chinese Dragon spruce (Picea asperata). The squirrels take the spruce cones, sit under the tree and remove and discard all the cone scales to get to the seeds. It's a truly squirrel-made (and very attractive) mulch!
