Friend or Foe?
« on: June 24, 2008, 05:53:45 PM »
Can anyone please identify if this is friend or foe?
It appeared on a plant of Anthyllis tejedensis - but it probably didn't start there.
Any help appreciated.

That's the caterpillar of Orgyia antiqua, a cute, little moth. More info here:

In the UK this moth is known as the Vapourer. The females are wingless and is one of the pests of fruit trees that is controlled by grease banding round the trunk 18" above the ground. In the garden they are not usually a problem except that the eggs are laid in batches of up to 100 or more.

We get somethign very similar here, caterpillar-wise.  No idea what it is, but it is very cute.  I think the accoutrements are marginally different in ours, but basically the same sort of look.
Cheers.

I like to see ladies in hats Lesley - but when would you wear it?

The comment re fruit trees would explain why, on release, the little beggar galloped straight towards the apple tree!

Hmmm.... how exactly does a caterpillar gallop (other than very slowly)?  ;)  Interesting visualisations there.  ;D
Cheers.

It all depends what's fashionable this year Paul. More fur or less, bunch of cherries or not, etc. Anne I think one could wear it at Ascot if one went to Ascot or maybe it would be suitable for me (granny) to wear at a grand- daughter's wedding (but not yet). Failing those, pulled well down over the ears, one could wear it on a cold day in the garden.

I wouldn't touch it as those hairs are very irritating.
