Apart maybe from the costs of living, nothing can compete with Sweden in the summer. Why not Gothenburg or maybe further north! The norhtern light you know. Almost not dark at all the whole night and lots of nature with lakes and forests. Sometimes the weather can be terrible but normally it's quite alright in june or july. Even august but then it is getting a little darker.

Kristl,

The funny thing is that if I was intending a nature type holiday the first place I'd think about would actually be Canada and Alaska etc!!  For sheer untouched beauty it would be hard to beat, at least from the pictures I have seen.  Of course we avoid the oil sand mining areas if we're after untouched!  ;)  I would love to visit Canada one day, but I'd probably head to the UK or Europe before that, as I now know so many people there who I could perhaps drop in on and visit.  ;D

Cheers.

Min winter temp -8 or -9°C. Max summer temp 40°C. Thankfully, maybe once or twice a year only.

Tom,

Long sleeves and long pants in Fiji!!!!! I think you're really lounging in the banana belt of Ireland, where it doesn't get quite as warm...
I learned my lesson at an early age when on holiday in Gibraltar in 1962.  My brother told me to cover up after 10 minutes in the sun, but with the wisdom of youth, I knew better.  That evening, I looked as if I had been blowtorched from head to foot.  Twenty years later I had forgotten this lesson when I was on holiday in Durness - as far North-West as you can go on the mainland.  It was sunny from 0330 to 2315 and I stayed out in shorts and nothing else.  The temperature was 14c and I ended up with sunstroke !!
From then, I have hardly ever worn shorts, even in the tropics.

I would wear shorts all the time. I was in shorts all day everyday until I went to high school at the age of 12! Trousers bug me no end. However, I did wear jeans in Trinidad, but then army ants do focus the mind a bit, especially when you see 5mm jaws 1cm apart anchored into your clothing! :o

Kristi,

I have given your list of destinations long and careful consideration, even doing a little internet research just to confirm my original opinion and this is that you should simply opt for 5B on your list. You need go no further, though an occasional visit to Italy would certainly not be discouraged.

The only year I went to school in Huddersfield was 62/63 and you know how bad the snow was that year! My dad was sweeping the snow of the steps of my Granny's hotel (the Mayfair in South Parade) for the umpteenth time when a chap in a car stopped and asked "can you tell me the way to Oldham?". My dad quickly adjusted his brush and said "Well, some 'old 'em like this and some 'old 'em like this!" It was June before the piles of snow finally melted, and yes, I walked to school in my shorts (when I wasn't going on the Lindley via Marsh trolley bush from Dalton, where my dad's mum lived) every day and the school never closed for bad weather.

My wife Clare has it in mind that, when we retire (Ha!Ha!) we should take a complete season out and, starting in southern Spain, follow the Spring as it progresses north, ending up in the Picos de Europa for the Narcissus asturiensis.
