Favourite alpines for troughs
« on: June 02, 2008, 02:53:11 PM »
Hi there people,

I'm planting up some mixed species alpine troughs and would be really interested to hear about members favourite trough plants. I've had good success with primula marginata and silver saxifrages in the past but am keen to plant for year round interest and colour with these new troughs. Your comments would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Dave

A "must have" must be the many dwarf Dianthus that are available. Plants in my troughs are here

Shouldn't be too hard to find plenty contenders for spring and summer colour but in autumn you could try autumn flowering crocuses, the smallest colchicums and Cyclamen cilicium to start with. Cyclamen coum in winter though it can get big after a few years. Others for autumn and winter? My mind has gone totally blank. Earliest crocus for winter is C. laevigatus for me. Looking at my own (winter) troughs at the moment, there's no colour at all except green and grey.
