Galanthus in May 2018
« on: May 05, 2018, 07:55:45 AM »
A few pictures from yesterday.
G.plicatus cultivars seem to grow mostly well in my garden.
'Sophie North' surrounded by Corydalis buschii, maybe I should move it..
'Diggory' is very good one for me. One bulb planted in 2013 has increased so much that I could divide it last summer and now I have it growing in two different places, and in both they flower well.
'The Pearl' also quite nice. Scilla in the front is S.sibirica subsp armena which I've grown from seed to flower some years ago, the first bulbous plant I tried to grow from seed and I'm proud I managed it. :)
'E.A.Bowles' is my favourite, it is so distinctive and pretty. I planted one bulb from Glen Chantry in summer of 2015 and look at it now. This winter I read somewhere that it can be very difficult to grow, I'm glad my snowdrop doesn't know that, and if I had known it could be difficult, I probably wouldn't have bought it.

Very nice photos.  It all seems a distant memory here!

Thank you David. :)
All plants are growing now so fast that snowdrops seem to disappear among other plants.
Some of the latest flowering now are 'Cicely Hall', 'Flocon de Neige' and 'Fieldagate Tiffany which is quite small, about the same height as Viola odorata 'Red Charme' behind (and around) it.

A damp and overcast day so the flower hasn't opened fully but here's my first snowdrop of the season - Galanthus peshmenii.
I saw my first AGS SHow in autumn 1997 and the Farrer nedal was won by Bob and Rannweig Wallis with a pan of this little Turkish snowdrop.
A couple of years later we got seed from Rannweig and this is one of the surviving plants in one of our raised beds in the rock garden though it doesn't flower every year.
Pleased to see it in flower today,
cheers

This morning was brighter and the flower opened up a bit - enough for a honey-bee to collect some pollen! Sadly it moved off before I could get a pic of it in the flower,

The Antipodeans have some wonderful drops, as you say Maggs! Hughes Emerald remains one of my favourite drops, beautiful and a great garden plant.

It is delightful to see their photos.

As Galanthus reginae-olgae does so well here (much to my surprise) I am wondering which others would do as well? very hot dry summers, mild winters with maybe a little frost and about 20" annual rainfall.
Thanks Maggi for posting the photos on this thread.

Hi Pat,
I find the best one in our conditions is Galanthus elwesii; it actually self seeds in our rock garden.
A couple of the hybrids are okay as well.
The double 'Lady Beatrix Stanley' increases in our garden in some spots.
Ironically Galanthus nivalis is the hardest to keep and to get to flower!
