Frit. Group Meeting at Wisley cancelled due to bad weather
« Reply #1 on: February 28, 2018, 10:16:26 PM »
It is announced that  "In the interest of safety both to speakers and visitors the committee have decided to cancel this Sunday’s Fritillaria Group Spring Meeting."

Sensible move in the light of  widespread bad weather.

I am about 30 miles (50 km) North of Harlow, we have about an inch (2 cm) of snow and the roads that were gritted are completely clear.  The Harlow AGS Show venue is just off the A414 which is a major trunk road that connects to the M11 a few miles away.  Greater Anglia say they will try to run a full normal service on the train line that serves Harlow today.  So as far as the locals are concerned there may not have been a problem getting to Harlow.  However some vendors, exhibitors and attendees do travel long distances to get to this event and I guess it is consideration for these people that has prompted the decision to cancel.  Or concern that the weather may take a turn for the worse, I suppose.
Almost in Scotland.

Indeed, a number of the nurseries due to attend are snowed in, as are some exhibitors, judges and helpers. It was felt best to make a positive decision in plenty of time rather than the chaos of a last minute decision.  Disappointing but probably the correct decision in the circumstances

Clearly the best decision, Martin.  With the red alert weather warnings  being given for yet more areas of the country it would be  daft to go ahead.
The roads need less traffic in such circumstances, not  more cars full of plants   being driven   by the (mostly) less than youthful !
A great shame for the nurseries in particular, who rely on the income generated from the shows.

The weekend event at  Glendoick Garden Centre where  SRGC folks were to demonstrate the planting of  troughs with alpines  has also been cancelled because of the snow.

As they began to be snowbound the other day, Rob Potterton  posted this :

"On a snowy day like today and you can't get into the garden, why not enjoy our web site....."
http://www.pottertons.co.uk/pott/index.php

Now there's a good idea - see the SRGC links pages or this pdf to see some of the great specialist nurseries that advertise with SRGC - pass a snowy day in pleasant contemplation of some retail therapy!

Nice advert in this cold weather.

Good part of my plants come from UK based nurseries advertised at SRGC site, including Pottertons. I was happy that some non-bulbous plants were successfully delivered bare rooted and the postage rate was under good control. Now is already more difficult - postage is a bigger issue. And the future is not bright any more for us, who do not live on any island and know English as the only non-mother tongue.

The School (Academy) where the Harlow show is held is closed to students today - and  will be tomorrow I imagine - hardly likely that staff there would be  keen to reopen on Saturday for a flower show.
