Eremurus germinated - Help!
« on: May 12, 2017, 01:51:49 PM »
Hello,

I started off Eremurus sp. seeds from Bjørnar on moist paper towel in March at 20 °C, then put them in the fridge on 24 April. First 10 days, there was no sign of action. I've been away for a week, and come back to an eruption of growth. 50% have germinated and have what I assume to be a (4-5 cm) long root, and a shorter cotyledon.

I'd be grateful for to anyone who can confirm this assessment - there appears to be root hairs on the longer 'appendage' growing up from the bottom of the picture.

I have moved them into the light, so hoping that at least one part will start to go green and give me a definitive answer about which way up to plant them.

Best regards

Hello Barnclos,

I understand this must be stressful for you, so I'll post few images from my seeds/seedlings library.

You assume correct regarding the germinated seeds. All monocots have the same germination pattern: primary root appears first, basal part of the cotyledon remains enclosed in the seed feeding from the endosperm and then the epicotyl elongates from the upper side.

First image - Eremurus tianshanicus showing the radicle emerging and then another monocot - Polygonatum pubescens with first and advanced stage of germination.

Dear Gabriela,

Thanks for the detailed reply.
I was away again this weekend - back to bonnie Scotland to watch a rugby match - and the cotyledon has started to green up.  It's a little late to start potting up tonight, but I'll get down to it first thing tomorrow.

Best regards,
