Snowdrops in baskets
« on: September 03, 2016, 09:48:35 PM »
Here is how I pot my snowdrop seedlings into baskets. Where there are only a few of each cross they must share a basket to save space.
I start with 1cm gravel in the bottom, then 3-4cm compost, and a thin layer of sharp sand.

As I'm potting 2-year old seedlings here, and there are only a few of each cross, they must share a basket to save space. I divide the basket using pieces of plastic cut from a drinks bottle. Each section contains one cross, and the label, then the bulbs are just covered with more sand.

The basket is then filled to 1cm from the top with compost and top dressed with gravel. The baskets are plunged to the rim in sand in a frame.

The young bulbs are often to be found at the bottom of the pot so do as The BD suggests and sow the seeds deeply to save them the effort. Judging by the variation in size of the bulblets, there may have been germination over two years. These are 2-year old seedlings.

Sand is kept constantly moist. Extra water given when it warms up and they are in full leaf, plus a couple of liquid feeds if I remember.
