Leaf that is just visible at the bottom looks too fine to be Anemone narcissiflora but definitely an Anemone.
Sown any at all?
AGS and SRGC (sorry) seed exchange Anemone have been a lucky dip over the past couple of years.

Yes I think that must be the answer although the clump I found in the garden from Anemone seed 2 years ago looks slightly more buff than yellow. Anyhow mystery solved thanks to you all.

Anemone multifida comes in lots of colours from white to yellow and pink, I suspect that's part of the reason it gets confused for all sorts of other things in seed donations, including quite frequently Pulsatilla, which of course has very different seed.
