« on: April 05, 2016, 10:48:27 AM »
The SBA have their annual exhibition in central London beginning on Friday 15th April and running until Saturday 23rd April.

Entry is free and there will be a huge quantity of botanical art on show - far bigger than the RHS equivalents. All work in the main exhibition is for sale.

I know exactly where you have been Dear .... behind an easel  ;D

What my modest husband hasn't said is that it turns out he is rather good at this botanical art lark, (I may have shown some of you  photographs of his portfolio pieces at the Kendal show, after all it's a wife's duty to embarrass their husband   ::) ), not only has one of his pieces been selected for inclusion in the exhibition as an example of students work but he has been award a distinction for the work he submitted during the diploma course.

Well done Darren, that's a tremendous achievement. It sounds like a very intensive course, no wonder you have not been seen in public very much recently.

Thank you all :)

It has pretty much taken up all my spare time for over two years. As I work entirely in pencil (coloured or graphite) it is very time consuming and laborious to produce a piece of the minimum A3 size required. In the link below you can see an example of one of my assignments. The detail is not visible at this scale but the garlic bulb took the entire 2014 Christmas break, and every single parallel vein on the lemon grass is drawn in - at life size - which drove me half mad!

The link also acts as a nice preview of the exhibition as it is a review of last year.

Congratulations, Darren.

Having been fortunate in attending a couple of these exhibitions when we lived in the Midlands, I can vouch for the great detail and skill that goes into the works.

Thanks Chris & Fermi.

Fermi - the great thing is how much I have learned about plants by having to observe them so closely for drawing. I have further plans regarding bulbs. One of my diploma pieces (which got the highest marks possible) was a full botanical study with dissection of Massonia longipes. I hope to continue and do a series of the whole genus.

I've added a couple of examples of my work to the 'Reasns to be cheerful 2016' thread:
