Scottish Gardens - 2015 Discussion Weekend

Travelling with fellow snapper Peter Maguire I was fortunate to be taken to several excellent gardens as we wound our way in and out of the Highlands.  I have posted my thanks to the team who organised the excellent weekend in the relevant thread.  Here I will try to give a flavour of the glories of Autumn that greeted us at Branklyn, Explorers garden and Edinburgh Botanics.

Having given a taster of Branklyn in the other thread, I will start there. 

Autumn bulbs were a notable feature, crocus and colchicum set off well by the seasonal colours.  Crocus speciosus and Colchicum speciosum looked especially fine. 

There were many other delights which will follow as time allows

Plenty of rhododendron interest at Branklyn of course.  Foliage caught the eye on this visit but there were a few late flowers about.

Names for the foliage plants would be appreciated ....

The first rhodo (rusty) is surely pachysanthum, the last (blue-purple) a Lapponica Subsection species and the cinnabarinum may be a seedling - doesn't quite fit any of the named forms with those shortish flowers though the off-season may have caused that in which case a Roylei maybe.

Thanks John - side on the cinnabarinum flowers muck longer than they look in this shot.

Plenty of seedheads.  Mecanopsis, lilies, cardiocrinum and sorbus with their bright berries.

Tony  - The cinn flowers still look too short for Roylei, compare them with this shot of Roylei by Jens Birck.  Still could be a true cinn, the flare is a bit bothersome though it happens in cinn. Purpurellum Group.

Plenty of flower still looking nice at the start of October - maybe helped by benign September weather.

many plants were labelled but the labels often got lost in luxuriant and tumbling foliage ..... and I was in a daze at the beauty of it all!

Two mecanopsis still in flower, M. x cookei (punicea x quintuplinerva) and a single flower on a pale blue mec.  The foliage on some rosettes waiting for next year to flower was also eyecatching.
