Slovenia: Vogel area and Julian Alps
« on: September 01, 2015, 08:28:15 PM »
Vogel is a ski resort in the Triglav National Park, and we made use of the ski lifts to avoid a lengthy climb through the forest. I find skiing areas pretty soul-destroying on the whole with all the infrastructure, but once you get away from the cablecars and pistes they are a convenient way to get into the mountains relatively quickly. Unfortunately we still didn't have time to get right to the top here, and there were an awful lot of other walkers with the same idea as us! Still, we got some fabulous views of the Julian Alps and saw some nice alpines in their natural habitat.

View of the Julian Alps from the Orlav Glave cable car.

Pinus mugo scrub was extensive and sheltered various other species including Aconitum lycoctonum, Veratrum and Pulsatilla spp.

Gentianella ciliata was very beautiful and quite common in disturbed areas.

Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia. I love its white colour and improbable shape (if you drew a mountain like that, everyone would say it was very unrealistic).

This little Campanula was common in crevices, as here. Anybody know what it might be? I wondered about C. cochlearifolia but C. scheuchzeri also seems possible. ** Update - found a very good online key for Campanula here: http://www.mittelmeerflora.de/index.htm. Using this it keys out as cochlearifolia.

Frog orchid, Coeloglossum viride (may be Dactylorhiza now, European orchid taxonomy has been quite fluid of late). We didn't see evidence of many orchids, even though the limestone country should be perfect (though of course too late for flowers of most). A good deal of Epipactis cf. helleborine in the woods, and one or two others, but I was hoping for a wider range

Pulsatilla alpina, a small specimen very out of season!

Saxifraga aizoides

Thanks Maggi, yes it was a great trip and I'd love to go back earlier in the season. Beautiful country, friendly people and a lot cheaper than most of the Alps!

Photo issues should be fixed now.
