During our recent trip to Scotland we visited two west coast gardens not far from Glasgow, on 17th April. The first was Glenarn - see http://www.gardens-of-argyll.co.uk/view-details.php?id=488. Owned by SRGC members Mike and Sue Thornley, the well-established garden has a magnificent collection of magnolia and rhododendron, as well as a newly refurbished rock garden. Most plants are labelled, but time did not permit me to note everything I photographed, so - name that plant!

Located in Rhu near Helensburgh, this beautifully maintained garden is well worth a visit.

At our recent local meeting our speaker,  Ian Alexander showed Rhododendron forrestii var. tumescens, lamenting its reluctance to flower freely.
 Seeing it again here I am reminded of this article  from  the Journal  of the American Rhododendron Society in 1983:

Last week I followed Ralph's advice and visited Glenarn. The Rhododendrons were simply spectacular, so I hope he won't mind me posting a few pics here. First a few of the Rhodo's, then a few from the rock garden (secure behind impenetrable deer fencing).

Rhododendron x loderi 'King George' - a favourite since falling in love with a specimen at RBGE
Rhododendron viscidifolium
Rhododendron augustinii
Labelled as Rhododendron yunnanense?
Rhododendron vaseyi - a elegant shrub with exquisite flowers, just look at that green stigma

Rhododendron lindleyi
Rhododendron johnstoneanum - gorgeous scent!
Rhododendron luteum - commonplace and easy maybe, but a cracking plant nonetheless
Rhododendron cantabile x 'Blue Tit'

An overview of the rock garden, with azaleas providing a brilliant splash of colour.
Of the Trilliums this one (a form of T. chloropetalum?) with bronze flowers was outstanding.
A single Meconopsis flower nicely juxtaposed with a Euphorbia
Meconopsis cookei

I can only echo Ralph's comment, well worth a visit and with lots of changing interest through the year.

I was lucky with my timing, Ralph although some species were over and some yet to perform. A long season of interest for the Rhodophiles. Thanks for the 'head up' on a great garden to visit.
