Hippeastrum 2014
« on: April 13, 2014, 10:05:33 PM »
Things have been blooming among the Hippeastrum species in the greenhouse.  Today, Hippeastrum evansiae bloomed:

438398-0

This came from Bolivia years ago. To my eye, the color is not so pinkish, rather more a lemon yellow.  Sadly, I ahve never been able to set seeds on these evansiae with pollen from othere evansiae.

Recent bloom in the greenhouse:  Hippeastrum psittacinum from Brazil.  Grown from seed from Brazil.  Some of the seedlings looked like hydrids to me, but I think this one is the pure species.

From seed it seems to take from 6 to 10 years.   I tend to allow things to endure neglect on an occasional year, which perhaps slows things down.

Here is another species blooming:  Hippeastrum glaucescens, from Brazil, very similar to psittacinum and maybe identical to iguazuanum:

The next one is probably Hippeastrum vittatum, also from Brazil:

439248-1

The vittatum only took 7 years to bloom from seed.

Hippeastrum 'Green Goddess'.  It would have looked better against a blue sky seen through a clean window but that was not the situation here yesterday.

That's a lovely colour combination, the green looks good with the pure white.
One I'll have to look out for.

An "amaryllis" is for life, not just for Christmas.  See what a great display you can achieve after a few years.
Almost in Scotland.

Your warm garden is just the place for the Hippeastrum parodii, I think. The colour is lovely, Hans, you will be pleased to get it  flowering.

Nice to see the parodii bloom.  In my greenhouse, they are not very happy.  There is probasbly not enough sun inside the greenhouse -- have to have some shade most of the time -- and outside is has scarcely stopped raining since April.  This would not have bothered the Hippeastrum harrisonii, since they grow in water.  My harrisonii bloomed abundantly in the greenhouse in April and set plenty of seeds.  I have surplus seeds of harrisonii if anyone wants to swap.

We have quite a few clouds, Hans - but most of them do not seem to be willing to share their rain even here.

There's Jim getting too much rain and Robert in California in a drought.....   Strange weather.  :-\

It's drizzling here again today, in spite of the weatherman's promise of dry sunny weather for a few days.  I went back and opened the shading in the greenhouse, so it will be a little less dark in thee for a while.
