Information sought about Ole Sønderhousen
« on: February 20, 2014, 09:06:04 PM »
A friend is preparing an article about Fritillaria and is seeking more information about the person Ole Sønderhousen. I could only tell him that there are some articles in The Rock Garden nrs. 90 and 91, where I found out that he was Danish and died in 1992. But no other information about the person.
He introduced some new plants, and at least one was called after him, a collected Fritillaria pinardii ( OS477) named Ole Sonderhousen.
(OS477 might refer to "collected in 1977")? We would like to know as much as possible about the origin of this Fritillaria and himself and his work(s) (?Kopenhagen Bot. Garden)
Hopefully somebody can help?

Hello Luit, I have copies, in Danish, of Ole Sonderhausens booklets, Cyclamen and Fritillaria if they are of any use to you. Among others there are Fritillaria, Cyclamen, both C.hederifolium and C. pseudibericum  that have his collection numbers and of course  what he collected on Corfu as Galanthus corcyrensis OS999.

Did Sønderhausen have a nursery? In the mid 80s I bought a bulb of F. ruthenica (the real thing) from Wisley & I was told  it was from him. Unfortunately (being ignorant at the time) I failed to enquire whether it was from his collection or his nursery. I know he collected in Turkey (including F. sibthorpiana) but I don’t know whether he did so elsewhere.

Fritillaria: Ole Sønderhousen
Ole Sønderhousen: He started writing about Fritillaria in "The alpine garden" in June 1988, and also Cyclamen. I have his descriptions, but not Fritillariabog or Cyclamenbog, but try to contact Jørn T Jensen.

Thanks for this Maggi - very informative. In my note above I should have written F. serpenticola (= F. carica subsp. serpenticola) not  F. sibthorpiana. Senility creeps on apace.

Thank you again Maggi! Very interesting to read what kind of man Ole Sønderhousen was. He must have been a very keen collector.
Will study all other references as well, I seemingly missed a few from the AGS  :-[  ;)
