Iris cycloglossa from Jim Archibald 585.700. Sown December 2006. Much taller than he says in the seedlist. This one is 80cms.  I have 6 so will try 4 in the garden and keep 2 in the frame as insurance.

a few late flowering Junos in my garden today . Lucky to have any flowers left as the local large white ,yellow crested cockatoos -a serious pest - attack any plant with showy flowers .

Two Junos in bloom now,
I. planifolia and a lovely Iris edomensis,  which is a real challenge to grow but it worth every minute!

The edomensis is spectacular and worth all the hard work involved.

:o :o :o What a stunning plant Oron !  Oh yes.......... Indeed, every effort worth. So there are indeed people who are able to grow this fantastic beauty. Can you tell us something about those efforts ?

Thanks everyone,

Kris,

Out of all the Iris SP. i grow i find I. edomensis the most difficult one.
Starting from the soil, i have tried all sorts of mixes to create a well drainage mix that still keep a little amount of humidity but failed each time as plants just rotted in a very short time. Than i have tried all sizes of terracotta pots the larger contained too much humidity and the smaller dried out too quick.
After few seasons i have found that using the natural soil which is Loess soil, the common soil in the deserts around here, it is quite chalky so i  mix it with extra gravel using small terracotta pots [15cm] then plunge the pot in sand.
This species need as many hours of sun possible and will not tolerate even the smallest amount of extra water therefor when ever rain comes i need to take the pots out to a shelter where it stays dry.
Also, i spray it quite often with  fungicide as i do with all my Oncos. The leaves of this species are narrowly channeled there for water often remain trapped inside to cause leaf diseases and as they coil on the ground i put underneath them a little stone  to isolate them from touching the humid soil. So its almost like rasing a pet with the difference that this one doesn't bark when it need something...

Thanks for this information Oron , I appreciate ! I don't grow this species at home , but a bit of ambition is what we need sometimes  ;D
I certainly can dream of it now ....
Very interesting method and maybe useful for other delicate species .
