There was talk of having problems with ants around this time last year, John,  in a paeony thread, but no mention of what to use to get rid of them.
The nearest I can find, apart from the link David gives above,  is this,  where Stephen Vella wrote :

With a lot of toxic chemicals going off the shelf I have been using more and more often organic sprays like the chillie and garlic sprays bought at most garden centres. It really works. I had drench some pots that had root aphids. I even tried it on some ants and it works!

Also neem oils are good as a contact insecticide Ive used it on lace bugs and great for killing mites.

It's alive..... ;D     And yes John i tried it..you will see a huge diff. in a week or two ...Don't know if you can get a lemonade named "Fun light" ?...that's one we got here and works great with ants...this is a common way to kill them here in Scandinavia...so it's not just me who tried it...Best of luck and give us a feedback  when you tried it...//Jonny

It seems that ants are fussy drinkers!!!
I tried with the "light" quality of a well known american brand containing aspartam. They didn't like it!

My old method is:

fill a saucer with Coca Cola ( or any other sweet Limonade ) and add some Drops of a insecticid ( p.e. as active Dimethoat ) ....place this saucer where the ants run  8)

Sugar syrup with a little borax dissolved in it. Wandering workers imbibe the stuff, take it back into the nest, and feed it to their stay-at-home brethren, including, aha! the queen. It doesn't take long to destroy a nest.

I can't offer advice about buying borax, however. In Canada and the US, it's sold as a laundry adjuvant, quite cheaply.
