Both forms are very elegant  but there is something  extra special about the shading on the purple form.

I've never seen Bessera before - many thanks Hans for drawing my attention to such a handsome plant. I see that the red form is available quite cheaply from 'Rare Plants'.

Most garden centres in the UK now stock the usual red form - and at about half the price of Rareplants! expect 10 bulbs for about £2.99

Thanks Paul. Why does your price comparison not surprise me?

has anyone had success starting Bessera elegans from seed?

the seed is ripe now at end of August in N. hemisphere , in nature i expect the seed to drop now and get started before the winter drought.
or should i wait to start in May?

Thanks Rimmer

Hi Rimmer ,

I have sown seeds of my Bessera purple form last year in spring ( March )
My idea was it is a summer growing plants ...so it should sown  in spring

I had only few seeds ...but they all comes up - and they looks well
....my mother plant ( Bessera purple form ) is died in mean time ...so I hope the color is stabil with the seedlings
