Goodness Hagen, Grüner Frühaufsteher is a little star let alone an early riser!

Green Tear is selling for over £300 on ebay but I think Grüner Frühaufsteher looks almost better.

I find the same with Selina Cords, yet when it was bought it was twice as tall, hopefully as the bulbs get older and older they will be taller plants but no sign of it yet.

I think I know the secret of Hagen  :-X :-X :-X

He cross his Galanthus with Cucumbers (gherkin)

This cumcumbers are famos in his area ( Spreewald ) and in carneval the people do not throw away from the waggons bonbons ,choclate and other sweet things as typical in germany ....in Cottbus they throw gherkin  :o :o :o

So my idea for a better name than "Grüner Frühaufsteher" would be "Cottbuser Essiggurke" ( "Cottbus gherkin ") ;D ;D ;D

Hello Robin,
good to see GREEN MILE here also.
In my eyes it is one of the best virescens, but I never saw it in nature.
But this day will come....

You would be not a good businessmen, if you would say other plants are better than yours.
What are your criterions to create the best? Price?
Much of green, deepness of green, flower size, flower shape, vigour, health???
GREEN MILE is a good member  of an increasing virescens society.

Sorry for saying GREEN TEAR is the king, this was not correct. This was only a fairy story. It is not the only one. It is also only a member of the green court.

Here is a picture of another green knight: HAGEN HASTDUNICHTGESEH`N ;)

Almost incredible, how all these wonderful virescent types show up from everywhere. Are they all just finds or the result of careful breeding?

Here is FEDERSCHWINGEN. If you get the chance to get it, use the chance
One of my absolute favorites, but not a cultivar of mine.

At first there was only one seedling.
Now a have a pot full of twinscaled flowering plants
So it is not longer a plant in the background.

How could we disagree, Hagen, it has a nice round ovary or receptacle and a delicate wash of green on the outers.

Hagen Engelmann, did not you try to cross the most green snowdrop with the most yellow form?
Appearance of large yellow spots is possible on petals (F2-F3).

We have a lot of guest at this topic, but without opinion.

Today was a good spring day. The late flowering galanthus like this weather.
Here is HAGEN HASTDUNICHTGESEH`N. It is not only another virescens. It is a real gem.
I hope Ian ...the Christie kind will have a look to this topic also.
We have not only snow destroyed flowers ;). We have a few fine news also.

My life with the green snowdrops is full of ups and downs. Last weekend I lifted some bulbs and a few had small holes on the basal plate. Grubs. My feelings were sour and annoyed. I put the bulb into water over a long night, so the grub had no chance. But the bulb gets a second chance.

Last year I separated such an infected bulb. Here you can see the result: natural twinscaling. (it is one of the better Gnv-types).

Mike, at first in my garden a few greens stand side by side. Now I have younger greens and older too.

Alan, it is the grub of the big narcissus fly (only one grub pro bulb, seldom more). But this was not the massage. Important, that you can kill off the grub with a long bath (a few hours) of only water without any poison.

Here is a better portrait of the grub:

The first Gn Virescens is blooming (sorry, at first in the greenhouse). This year it is GRAKES GREEN BELLS. Only one day later GRÜNER SPLITTER also started to open. But the classical Gn Virescens is just over the ground. Late, late.
My only bulb of GRÜNER FRÜHAUFSTEHER is gone. I have 8 bulbills now.

'Cowhouse Green' is just beginning to flower here and must get a photo. I only have this one virescent snowdrop, other than 'Viridapice', but having seen those amazing plants of Hagen's from last year I clearly need one or two others in close proximity to create a little green oasis amongst all the white snowdrops! Fun to read back through this thread.

To late now John, and it's raining cats and dogs outside. Just took it before a new spring storm took off.
I think in England it will be worse. Hope to take a better picture tomorrow or the day after.
In my opinion it is just a little bit to small to be outstanding, but it's funny to see it growing between the just nivalis.
Hagen's Green one's are still contrasting better than this fairly to little treasure.
But as you ask, I hope tomorrow will be dry enough to take a picture, because the garden does often looks more like a marshland than a real garden.
I'm gardening on extremely  heavy loam.

Hey sorry to drag this up from the archives, but just wondering if people have established 'green mile' now and it's starting to filter into regular trading circles? Of course it's difficult to get bulbs into Australia but it's not impossible I suppose if we get enough people together to share the cost... if grown from seed what proportion would show the full green markings on the outer petals?
Title: Re: Green Galanthus - Galanthus nivalis VIRESCENS
Post by: Hagen Engelmann on December 17, 2014, 05:24:26 AM
I'm sure most of the selled GREEN MILE were twinscaled.
first bulb =3 years
next 8-10 bulbs = also 3 years

Al my seedlings of green look very very different. And I cannot say the children of green parents will be more green. It is also a question of good luck. I also like stripes and blotches and blur, sprayed, sparkled marks and faces It should be a nice composition and a real good flower should be unique.

I have never seen it offered for sale (other than from the nursery where it originated) nor growing in someone's garden.  It's hugely expensive and I imagine the start-up cost puts most people off.

If you would have green blood in your veins, you would have patience also.
How do you mean I have to wait from the first flower to the next flowering seedling? 5-6 years.

But with GREEN MILE it is another way.
I could shorten the time of waiting with money.

If you have only seed - forget the money!
