Here I go:
The Gibson Brothers // Que Sera mi Vida :'( :'( :'(
Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show // Baby Makes her Blue Jeans Talk :'( :'( :'(
Billy Joel // Uptown Girl :'( :'( :'(
And yours? ;D

The birdie song and anything sung by Lulu or Cilla Black!
-
Birdie Song is excluded from competition. It is not a pop song... It is a song for retarded people ;D
-
One of my colleagues runs discos all over the country, usually at weekends. He was a DJ at an event up north where Billy Joel was the headline artist. The audience brayed for 'Uptown Girl', but her refused to sing it (acrimonious divorce?), so my colleague played it as BJ was walking off! ;D

Easily seen that the weather is awful and no-one can get any plant work done.......
Maggi,
that's not right. I'm in a nursery, and we can do plant work. But no person want a plant by this white landscape :'(
They all hope that the "autumn spring" arrived next week in Germany.

Good point, Uli,there are not many out shopping in this time.
We have altready seen the worrying consequences for nurseries in the snow... so perhaps more work to clear the snow from glass and tunnels, eh?

I'm sorry Maggi, what about a song of Robert Plant? 8)
-
Aha! I'm a big fan of Robert Plant... do you know his recent recordings with Alison Krauss ? Fantastic! And one Ian has just bought.... I'll look for the title.
This reminds me of a time when I got a new hairstyle, longish curls, I liked it very much 8)... but my friend said .... oh, that's different... you look just like Robert Plant. :o ::) :-X
-
My vote for most irritating....... "Agadoo" by Black Lace. Horribly infectious once it gets into your head. Totally inane and pointless whatever way you look at it. ::)
For those who don't know the words..... http://www.lyricstime.com/black-lace-agadoo-lyrics.html
(For the sane people who don't want it back in their heads, don't read the lyrics. I can't get the darn thing out of my head now. :o :o :o :o)
And even worse now as I just found the clip on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POv-3yIPSWc
How lame is the video.... and those leather pants? How do they breath (let alone dance)? ;D
OK, I'll stop now. I won't be able to sleep because of this. It's in my head. Aaaaargh!!!!! Hans, you have a lot to answer for for starting this. ;) ;D
-
Aaargh! Paul, even without listening to agadoo, I now have it bouncing round the inside of my head like a demented kangaroo! :o We must have an antidote thread! ???
-
Little boxes made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same......... ::)

Not yet...I am not even started!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5iOIa4EZuQ You don't need the subtitles...it speaks for itself..
Agadoo is great!! :'( :'( :'( :'(
-
Hope Ian is enjoying the new Robert Plant album Maggi. I was pleased to see he has covered two songs by Low - my favourite contemporary band, who I saw live only two weeks ago, and made a good job of them too. Unfortunately I think they are Susan's least favourite songs on the album..
As for irritating pop songs, I'm casting my vote for 'Hey Mickey' by Toni Basil.
I'd agree with Cliff regarding 'Rap', a genre whose name I always felt was missing a 'C', except that I don't want to legitimise it by mentioning it in a thread about actual songs. ;)
-
Darren, myself I prefer RP's "Raising Sand" with the sublime Alison Krauss, but "Band of Joy" is a fine album....playing it got us happily up and down to the recent AGM !

'I know a song that get's on everybody's nerves'.

About almost of current "pop" music irritates me. Changing the subject somewhat I believe this song is appropriate for the current weather and financial climate
-
A good one, Tom.... the great McGarrigles, Mary Black AND EmmyLou to please David..... a "hit" there, I think!
-
Felt I had to post this as an antidote in case we are getting too gloomy.... though heavens knows, for a joyful song it could be more cheery sounding!!
Kate and Anna McGarrigle with a youthful Rufus Wainwright singing "Better times are coming" ! ;D

John, then I can't invite you over to my house around the Christmas holidays where I've been know to put Celine Dion's version of Ave Maria on indefinite repeat :D

Presumably from the album "These Are The Special Times" which means there's no point John visiting us over Christmas either.
You want irritating? Anyone who tries to imitate Robert Johnson.

Does that include Eric Clapton's interpretation of the blues, EC (the GOD) is my idol. Clapton does some Robert Johnson covers, have to admit Johnson's version of Love in Vain is more compelling, but I can't help but idolize any song by Clapton.

I'm afraid in my book "pop music" is an oxymoron and just demonstrates how we celebrate and reward mediocrity, and that is giving them the benefit of the of the doubt. Most of them couldn't sing if their life depended on it! It's just a noise, and mostly emanating from the perpetrator's nose! ???

Driving with a teenage daughter, I get to hear lots of pop music (yay! :o), much of it a blend of pop-rap ::). One that sounds okay, in a cliche catchy way, is Rihanna's Umbrella song, but it gets to an annoying part that has me lunging for the radio buttons to change it, the repetitive lyrics are:
umbrella - ella - ella - ay - ay - ay
umbrella - ella - ella - ay - ay - ay
umbrella - ella - ella - ay - ay - ay
umbrella - ella - ella - ay - ay - ay
umbrella - ella - ella - ay - ay - ay (... lyrics so good, has to be repeated in groups of fives)
I was going to post the youtube url, but visually its rather slick and provocative, so enough said.

Of course, Johnson is not "pop" either, we're mixing music genres. Alan, you're 3rd place behind Clapton, eh, that's awesome! ;D
-
Onion Man, the lyrics of Queens of the Stone Age put Rhianna's Umbrella song in the shade!
"Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol.
Cocaine. Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol.
Cocaine. Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol.

I confiscated one of those "push-the-top" sound effect thingies that plays the 'crazy Frog' jingle, from a pupil a few years ago. It's in my school drawer and goes off whenever I have a rummage for a pencil etc. ::)

EC is one of my idols too. Seen him at the Albert Hall a number of times (and got the tee shirts!). I agree that Robert Johnson was a one off and note that EC said he really had to struggle with his technique to play some of his stuff. I prefer to think "homage" rather than "cover".

Aye right! I did dance to 'Brown Sugar' at my 21st, but then Mick Jagger was a chorister. My first pop record was "Dowadiddydiddydumdididoo" and my first LP was "A Hard day's Night". Mostly I listened to Wagner, Purcell and Beethoven though, as they were required for the music course at school when you needed to be able to read music, harmonise on the piano, write three part harmony and play two instruments to grade 7 standard to pass the Scottish Higher. I remember my dad taking me to hear Beethoven's violin concerto (complete with Kreisler cadenza) and being blown away by it.
-
Whatever turns you on mate :P ::) ;D

In solidarity with Anthony, I can say that I first heard non-classical music when I was about 9! And until then the only radio station I knew how to find on the dial was Radio 3. First record purchase confessions ... LP: either Shadows or Abba Greatest Hits :-[ :-[ :-[ - first single: Gerry Rafferty, Baker Street, which I got a friend to buy because I was too shy to go into a record shop.
My 13 year old daughter's favourite music at the moment is the Doors, the Rolling Stones and Bach piano music - which I think is quite cool :D
-
I'm still chuckling about Cliff's comment.

This morning radio 3 played the adagio from Serenade No. 10 for winds in B flat major ("Gran Partita") by Mozart. When the oboe came in the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. What pop music can do that!?
-
Depends on your definition of pop music I guess Anthony, and the music and sounds that speak to you most. Certainly the anodyne rubbish that makes the charts these days would be more likely to induce vomiting.
But... I can think of a number of non-classical performances that have the same effect on me. Kurt Cobain's performance of Leadbelly's 'In the Pines' (aka 'Where did you sleep last night') on Nirvana's MTV Unplugged show, Radiohead's 'Street Spirit', John Lennon's vocal on 'Twist and shout' on the first Beatles album, the harmonies in Mamas & Papas 'California Dreaming' or Crosby, Stills & Nash's 'Southern Cross', Simon & Garfunkel's 'Sound of Silence'.
Speaking of the Nirvana show, the other thing that stood out was their use of a classical cellist for the set. The sound of the Cello always makes those hairs on my neck rise, there is just something really evocative about it.
Even more up-to-date, there is some lovely piano work on the Florence and the Machine album 'Lungs'
I've also noticed that I have a strong preference for music in minor keys.
-
Yes Darren I see what you mean. Some of those come close.
-
For me it has always been Roy Orbison with 'In Dreams' and ' Mystery Girl'. The hairs on my kneecaps do a double-flip!

I play this when I feel down. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYMiHlDLko8

Darren they are my favourite band of the moment her vocals are incredible.
-
agree Davey - that album was my favourite of last year by miles. I stupidly missed the chance of seeing them play a show in our local library just before they got big. Think they are recording a follow-up but Lungs is going to be hard to top!

A good trance house track with pounding bass and a good (sampled) vocal or more recently I had to pull over to listen to this track

Sounds pretty good Mark, reminds me of some Moby music.
-
Moby - I organised a dance music event (rave) in Belfast and he was the headliner

-
Mark the best headliner i ever saw at a rave was 808 state i have seen moby and was pretty blown away and also Faithless incredible and a group of lads called the ratpack not frank sinatra ect.
-
wow 808 State
raise your hands in the air, whistle posse blow

Davey you were in your 20s during the rave scene? Ratpack came to Belfast also. Look up Hellraiser and Evolution on Youtube. Those are the events I helped organise
-
wow Mark i'm very impressed, yes i was mate i started going to the Hacienda in the late late eighties then got into the rave scene met some fantastic people and had a great time its a shame we didnt know each other then. ;D ;D
-
Moby - I organised a dance music event (rave) in Belfast and he was the headliner
My iPod is full of the amorphous Moby, they cover so many styles. Some of their songs are particularly useful for my iPod "running playlists", finding those energetic yet hypnotically repetitive compositions that help make me run longer and drive stamina ;D I like the one you posted... I might take it on a run and try it out :)
-
McMark I'll make you a list sometime.
ummm repetative hypnotic beats
-
On the "Dance Music" front, I find Deeper Shades of Hooj (Vol 2, or is it Vol 3?) particularly good, or at least used to when I could find my darn CD. ::) I discovered it about 10 years ago and there is something about the rising bass beat that I find always gets me into a good mood, regardless of how I am feeling. Wish I could find the darn thing. I just get lost in the music. Anthony, please ignore the above. I somehow doubt you would like it. ;)
-
Hooj Choons? Paul you would have enjoyed the 90s in the UK
-
There is a copy on Amazon UK for £3. Would you like it?
-
McMark you should be able to run to this

OH! I like it (808), never heard of 808, it got my feet moving and had to do a couple laps around my office ;D The second example is good for running too I think... never really know until I try it. I can no longer afford a gym, nor do I have access to the small gym our company had for employees, but one of my favorite things to do is finesse playlists for various exercise equipment; the treadmill of course, but also elliptical & recumbent bike. It puts a whole new dimension to music, not just for listening, but to motivate movement. For long distance running, it's all about finding a psychological groove, so the powerful hypnotic stuff works.
One of my more recent favs is Death Cab for Cutie - "I will possess your heart" (long repetitive build-up version), great bass sound... run run run. While hypnotic, it has a long slow escalating build-up. Ran my 5-miler today, -10 C, cloudy and gusty, (COLD!), but Death Cab came through as usual. You're right Mark, many people will find such repetitive music annoying.

-
Mark,
Thank you kindly for the offer. I've just downloaded a copy off the Net. It's all "one" track (i.e the whole album is a single file) so I can only use it on the computer, but I can still listen to it and that is the main thing. I must find a track list now so that I can head straight to particular tracks. Ain't the internet great? ;D
McMark,
Interesting that you finesse playlists for a particular purpose. Not something I've ever thought about. Most of my MP3 listening is while gardening to be honest, as I don't run. I'm on my feet constantly for 32+ hours a week as it is, so the idea of running in my other time is not that attractive. ;D I can understand why you need the "psychological groove" (I love that phrase by the way) for long distance running. That really would be a key to mentally overcoming the physical stress you put on your body.
What a fascinating topic!! 8)
-
I feel a wee bit guilty about us changing direction of this thread from annoying songs but many people hate pounding bass synthetic drums
Who? Me? ;D ;D

that's a truism brother ;D

...it makes cars sound as if they have a broken washing machine in the boot.
-
Anthony,
While I might like music with a decent bass beat.... I absolutely hate idiots who drive (or park) with the music so loud that everyone else in the area has to listen to it as well. I don't mind people listening to loud music, but if it is loud enough to force the neighbours to listen to it, then get a set of headphones!! ;D ;D
I think you're doing a disservice to washing machines, by the way. No self respecting washing machine, be they broken or not, would want to sound like that. ;)
-
Perhaps it was a condenser-drier washing machine?
-
OK, Anthony, I'll ask.... what the heck is one of those? ???
-
McMark 808 State are named after the Roland 808 drum machine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TR-808 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TR-808)

Roland also made the 303 bassline machine that created the Chicago acid house sound much used in the late 80s - aciiiiiiiid
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TB-303 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TB-303)

-
OK, Anthony, I'll ask.... what the heck is one of those? ???
It's a washing machine with a built in tumble drier that doesn't require a wide hose connected to the outside as the water vapour condenses and is drained through the water outflow hose.
-
Perfect answer, Anthony ... even I get the gist of that! :D
-
Danged new-fangled technology!! ;D
Never heard of it before, Anthony. You learn something new every day. :)
-
We need these new-fangled machines (the more new-fangled the less likely they are to work - and they didn't, very well) as there
are were very few drying days in Dunblane, so the whirly was rarely used. :( Now we have a separate tumbledrier.
-
Anthony,
This spring here has almost felt a bit like that as well. Definitely a case of having to chose your day to dry washing, that is for sure. Nowhere near as little sunshine as you guys get over there of course, but still a lot of murky weather by our usual standards. So glad for all the rain though, even if we are starting to consider spontaneously growing webbed feet. ;D
-
What rock star famously took his mum to stay at his house in California and took her into the garden to admire the view? She then looked at the cloudless sky and the beautiful gardens spread out before her. Her comment, noticing the total lack of washing hanging out anywhere, was "what a waste of a good drying day!" ;D
