The Hardy Plant Society Galanthus Group holds an annual AGM & Study Day and in 2018 this will take place on Sunday 18th February, somewhere in the West Midlands. A unique and popular feature of this event is the opportunity for members to sell snowdrops with just a small percentage commission going to the Group.
-
Harvey's Snowdrop Day is being held on 20th January 2018.
Like this year it will be a week before Myddelton!

There will be talks by Andy Byfield, David MacLennan and Wim Boens. Nurseries attending include: Monksilver, Glen Chantry, Woodchippings, Ivycroft, Matt Bishop and this year Edulis Nursery.
I forgot to mention the venue (which is the same as for the last two years) http://www.lilleshallnsc.co.uk/ (http://www.lilleshallnsc.co.uk/) , Lilleshall near Newport in Shropshire.

First and Last depending on which way you see it!
Speaking to Joe Sharman yesterday I learnt that there will be a talk by Melvyn Jope on November 4th 2017 at Shorelands AKA Blacksmiths on G.reginæ-olgæ, I understand Melvyn is bringing bulbs for sale and Joe will also be there.
Also there will be a Snowdrop Event at The Old Vicarage East Ruston, home of Alan Gray and Graham Robeson on February 4th 2018, the day after the AGS meeting:
http://www.e-ruston-oldvicaragegardens.co.uk/pages/view/563/Find-us.htm (http://www.e-ruston-oldvicaragegardens.co.uk/pages/view/563/Find-us.htm)
No doubt there will be further details later.
-
Great Bens last autumn snowdrop event at Blacksmiths was excellent, it was nice
to have a snowdrop event in the latter part of the year, and an opportunity to purchase
R O snowdrops, please keep us informed of any further details.
-
I am given to understand that the Shorelands/Blacksmiths event is still at the early planning stages so you should probably hold-off trying to make a booking until it has been officially announced. But thanks for the heads-up on both events, Brian.
Emma T. had been thinking about organising an event for aficionados of autumn-flowering snowdrops but she has not written anything about this lately. In my opinion, the real Cinderellas of the snowdrop world are the ones that flower in November and December and never get to be exhibited.

We have a second chance to visit Ashwood Nurseries in February as the Galanthus Group of the Hardy Plant Society will visit on Sunday 18th February. Their AGM and Study Day is being held in Kinver, Stourbridge. In the morning there are plant sales and lectures:
"Winter into Spring" by John Massey
"Snowdrops: The Path of Desire" by Eddie Roberts
Visits to Ashwood Nurseries then take place in the afternoon.
A unique feature of this event is that members are encouraged to bring and sell their own plants so you may well find a bargain or something that is not commercially available. Eddie Roberts also hopes to bring plants for sale. I am told that this event is nearly three quarters full after only two weeks - which galvanised me into action!

March 3, 2018 has been confirmed as the date for the Second Annual Galanthus Gala in Downingtown, Pennsylvania.
"The vendors are unparalleled and all your snowdrop, trillium, hellebore (and many other plant-related) dreams can come true. Whether you are a collector or wish to begin a collection of choice woodlanders and woody plants, it’s a lovely way to spend some time on a Saturday, catch up with old friends and make new ones. There will also be short talks presented by a few of the vendors on propagation, cultivation, etc. Refreshments will be available. (The date coincides with the opening date of the Philadelphia Flower Show; you could easily squeeze both in one day.) Further details (time, list of vendors, location) to follow, but do mark your calendar, it is a wonderful event. "

The snowdrop season kicks-off in England this coming weekend with two rival events in East Anglia. I say 'rival' because, unfortunately, these are scheduled on the same day, Saturday 20th January, and at exactly the same time. I think both have been covered previously in this topic but I thought it worthwhile to compare and contrast.
- Organised by Blacksmiths Cottage Nursery but with venue the Earsham Wetland Centre near Bungay in Norfolk, the event runs from 10 am to 2 pm with a talk by Gert-Jan van der Kolk at 11am. Tickets are £10 and presumably need to be booked in advance in order to attend the talk. Sellers (pre-publicised) are Joe Sharman, Ben Potterton and (our own) Brian Ellis.
- Organised by Harveys Garden Plants and held at their nursery near Thurston in Suffolk, this event also runs from 10 am to 2pm. There is no talk but the publicity says "rare species and cultivars on display and for sale" so perhaps there will be a display as well as sales? Tickets are £2.50 and are sold on the door. Sellers (pre-publicised) are Harveys themselves, Glen Chantry, Richard Bashford, John Foster, Michael Broadhurst, and Edulis Nursery.
The two events are only 32 miles and 45 minutes apart by road but it's a case of "so near and yet so far" as they have been scheduled for exactly the same time slot.
-
I agree, I live in rural Norfolk, love snowdrops, nothing goes on for 99 per cent of the year and then I have 2 events at one time and will no doubt miss out on something I really want as I am at the wrong place first and will be rushing about. But a great Saturday to look forward to wherever
you go...?
-
Bernadette, I believe there is a degree of rivalry between the organisers of the two events. Had it been otherwise, then one event could have been staged in the morning and the other in the afternoon and people might well have been tempted to go to both. As it is, we have a choice - but both options look good. Perhaps the loser is the Myddleton House sale on 27th January? This used to be the first sale of the season but it was moved to be a week later and so is now superseded by these other events.
-
Sellers (pre-publicised) are Harveys themselves, Glen Chantry, Richard Bashford, John Foster, Michael Broadhurst, and Edulis Nursery.[/li][/list]
I have checked with Richard and Valerie and they will not be attending this event - just in case anyone was hoping to see them there.
-
Brian must mean Richard Bashford (and his partner Valerie Bexley). I looked on the Harvey's Garden Plants web site and, surprisingly, could find no details of their snowdrop event there beyond the date and the time. I had to look back at a mailing I received at the beginning of December and the poster that was at the start of their sales list to find those details. Things must have changed (or not come to fruition) after that was published.
Similarly, I struggled to find first-hand information about the other event online. It is on the Facebook page of Blacksmiths Cottage Nursery but not on their web site (that I could find).
I guess this demonstrates the power of this web site and others that maintain a list of snowdrop events, so the event organiser does not need a lot of direct publicity.

Yes indeed I did mean Richard and Val from Woodchippings. Like you I could find nothing on Harvey's site and I had been told they would not be there so was surprised to see that you said they were and thought it best to check. I know the others will be there and I can imagine who I might have seen in the queue if I had wanted to go. As always these are as much social occasions as sales so I shall miss seeing people but hope to catch up at Myddelton which I always used to think of as the start of the season until Mr Harvey started his sale a week beforehand, now there are two - whatever next!

Yes, Brian, there has been such a proliferation of snowdrop events that clashes are becoming almost inevitable. The Myddleton House sale was on the 24th January in 2015 and the 23rd January in 2016. If they had stuck to this slot of the Saturday before last in January then they could have hung on to their premier position but I think they made a strategic error by deciding to take the last Saturday in January. As the AGS had muscled-in on the first Saturday in February then Roger Harvey, and now Ben Potterton, have been squeezed into this earlier weekend.
-
I’m going to have to miss Myddleton this year because I expected it to be earlier and can’t make the later date. Foolishly didn’t check and now have to entertain visitors. This will be pleasant but I will miss the frenzy which is always entertaining!
I must say though that I enjoy the way that snowdrops dominate the first two months of the year. So many new events and even more new snowdrops!
-
Actually David, we knew in 2014 when the date of Myddleton House's 2018 sale was to be: http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=11895.msg353188#msg353188 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=11895.msg353188#msg353188) . And we know their date for next year is 26th January 2019. I don't know if dates for any subsequent years have been announced but I think attendance at this event has dropped and they should try to win back customers by opting for 18th January 2020 in order to reclaim their position as first sale of the season. I enjoyed it more that way.

Alan, if indeed attendance at the Myddleton House event is declining, the organisers need to address one or two other things apart from the date.
-
I could be wrong, Steve, but I don't think that the queue stretched back as far last year as it has done previously.
-
Alan, if indeed attendance at the Myddleton House event is declining, the organisers need to address one or two other things apart from the date.
Good point Steve but this takes us into the world of Marketing, which generally is missing from much of the snowdrop world. Footfall at shows is almost certainly not a useful indicator of the health of the snowdrop market. A marketing expert would undoubtedly point out many other issues and indicators.
-
I could be wrong, Steve, but I don't think that the queue stretched back as far last year as it has done previously.
I thought the same, but I am told the attendance overall was just as good as before, obviously the hardened galanthophiles after the latest drops were in the queue and others turned up later.
-
That's interesting to know, Brian.
As far as Myddleton House is concerned, they make their money by charging for entry to the sale and, presumably, by charging each seller for their 'pitch'. I have no idea how much is charged per 'pitch' and whether this has ever changed nor whether that or ticket sales makes the most money for Myddleton. But I can envisage a year when there is a lot of footfall and not so much sales which appears as a success for Myddleton House and a failure for the vendors. Or it could, potentially, be the other way around with lower footfall but higher sales. However I, naive about marketing, would imagine that sales and footfall are more likely to go hand-in-hand than not.
Anyway, a short term success for Myddleton House is higher ticket sales and a long-term success is that they can charge a higher price per pitch. That's right, isn't it?

Disappointed to see the Great Comp site advertising its snowdrop event ("Snowdrop Sensation") with these words:
"Galanthophiles’ or snowdrop collectors, are among the most competitive varieties of plant nuts – some will stop at nothing to get hold of a rare bulb; even stealing from other galanthophiles isn’t ruled out."
Call me old-fashioned, but speaking as someone who has had snowdrops stolen in the past, how is it acceptable for a website to appear to be condoning such behaviour by endorsing it?

Hard to credit they wrote that- counterproductive at the very least - very silly to do so.

Everything’s looking fabulous at The Garden House, lots of work has been done getting everything labelled and shipshape. The season is advanced down here, hence the extra weekend being put on. All volunteer run this year again.

I went along to the snowdrop event at Harvey's Garden Plants today. The weather was miserable, cold and grey, drizzling whilst we stood in the queue then raining thereafter. It was pretty quiet at the start with the queue half its usual length or less. This meant that those who came early to get something that was in short supply must have had something of a field day. I saw quite a few old friends but missed seeing some others and many who came early disappeared off quickly, presumably to zoom over to the other event that was 45 minutes drive away. Steve Owen did the opposite and I was able to chat to him for a while in the restaurant whilst he had his breakfast.
Snowdrops new (to me) from Glen Chantry included 'Wol Staines' [GC18] (pictured in the Yearbook 2017) and 'Essex Girl', both of which sold out before I laid eyes on them. Another was 'Scrooge' [GC16], an early snowdrop with a 'face'. The snowdrop that we learned this year is 'PHD33463' they listed as such, similarly 'Emerald Hughes'.
Roger Harvey was selling one called 'Snoopy Eyes'. Is that the new name for Ian Christie's 'Snoopy' or has a mistake crept in?
John Foster had a couple of pots of Tim Ingram's 'Copton Trym' on sale; going rather too cheaply I thought.
I had a little chat with Paul Barney and Michael Broadhurst about a double snowdrop called 'Rodmarton', of which there would seem to be several forms in circulation.
There were still people milling around when I left at 12:15; not everyone feels compelled to turn-up early to this event. But I left still thinking that the best interests of galanthophiles were not being served by having two nearby events scheduled at exactly the same time.
-
We ventured forth from the balmy south coast and made a two day break of it, visiting Anglesey Abbey on Friday and Harvey’s on Saturday. We enjoyed Anglesey Abbey hugely - our first visit - and in beautiful winter sunshine. My wife enjoyed the coffee and magazines in Harvey’s cafe while I queued in the drizzle. There was a very nice atmosphere and much blunter elbows than at Myddleton! There was time and space to have a good look although a couple of snowdrops on my mental list had gone when I returned to the stall. I was pleased with my purchases though and enjoyed myself.
I should have introduced myself to you Alan but couldn’t be certain until I was back online and checked your photo. Sorry about that.

Altamount Plants announce that the Snowdrop Gala will be on 3rd February 2018 at Ballykealey Manor Hotel with speakers Graham Gough and Jim Almond
Previous post edited to add more details :
-
March 3, 2018 has been confirmed as the date for the Second Annual Galanthus Gala in Downingtown, Pennsylvania.

I will also be attending Myddleton for the first time this year. No, I'm not sharpening my elbows and getting my best speed walking shoes out. I'm also looking forward to meeting some folk in the flesh and marvelling at the spectacle of the snowdrop crush when the gates open at 10:30. If anyone recognises me, please come and introduce yourself.

First time opens now the Alex Snowdrop Garden in Döbrichau/Saxonia Germany for the next eight weeks.
In the four acre garden grows ca 120 different snowdrop varieties with more than 10.000 flowers.
With the Galanthus reginae - olgae with 9 varieties, started in 2.10.2017 to flower.
That means, the outdoor saison till begin of april is six month!
The TOP 25 of the best British snowdropvarieties flower here the second year.
Some here found seedlings from Galanthus elwesii flowers very early beginning on 19.11.2017.

A quick journey home was a great relief after the Myddelton Sale. It was quite like the old days a good SRGC contingent and great to meet Matt T, Emma, Zepherine, Neil, Richard Williams, Richard Webb, Kentish Lass, Viv, Debby, Arthur, Chas, Jane, David and Rachel et al The bacon baps were brilliant, and the soup was souperb (sorry). I hope all enjoyed it as much as I did and The Norfolk Eye had a good walk whilst we were all succumbing to the fever!
-
Glad to hear it went well - I hear the weather was not too bad which helps ... but you miss out a vital piece of info - what type was the soup???? ::) :-\
-
Well last year it was Mushroom and this year a delicious carrot and coriander, I would think homemade by the volounteers who run the cafeteria section and very tasty. Warmed the cockles so to speak.
The weather behaved but we drove home through rain. Hope everyone gets home safe.
-
Great to finally meet you too Brian, as well as the Norfolk Eye and all the other 'droppers. It was a nice convivial atmosphere and a very sociable morning. I was home (at my parents) within an hour. Snowdrops bare-rooted, carefully packaged and in the post back to the Western Isles!
-
Another lovely morning at Myddleton (warmer than some), good company & a great range of snowdrops and 'small colours' bought and now potted, labelled & logged. Just too dark/wet to get them in the ground tonight. Obsession, what obsession?
-
[attachimg=1]
Cosying up by the fire seems the best idea meantime! Who would want to be planted in this weather?!!
-

I thank I can see Matt T in some of the pictures; sadly I didn't spot him at the time and never managed to say hello.
-
"The January Sales" - how nice to see so many folks I know enjoying a bit of retail therapy !!
-
I found a solitary 4x4 with a really nice round shape at Myddleton (better than 'Market Cross', dare I say). But my point-and-shoot camera wasn't interested. You would think if I set it to Macro it could work out that I don't want to photograph trees!
[attachimg=1]
-
And just looking the other way from that find of Alan's...[attachimg=1]. I think the end of January is a good time, rather than choosing to go earlier and earlier to pip others at the post. In woodlands snowdrops are at their best in mid-February and if the snowdrop events really want to encourage a new audience as much as an older one its better to catch the moment when perhaps less sophisticated and obsessive gardeners eyes light up with the snowdrops in British woodlands and begin to be drawn in to a world of more detail.
-
it certainly seemed to be the peak time for snowdrops at Myddleton House, Tim. I saw very few that were still in bud and few that had finished flowering.
-
It is so nice to see pictures of snowdrop events and gardens, thank you! :)
-
On Monday to Friday, for about the next month, you can take a tour of the private snowdrop collection at Anglesey Abbey. Tickets can be booked in advance. I went there today, only to find that I was an hour and a half too late because this year the tour starts at 12:30. Even if you cannot make the tour, they have been spreading snowdrops around the grounds so there are very many to see, lots of different ones but not with labels however.

Hallo Alan, it is fantastic to see so many snowddrop-people interesting in buying new varieties of snowdrops!
Three years ago I found on a Snowdrop-tour to East-England a similar enthusiasm!
End of februar we come private to Scotland to see snowdrop-places and I hope to find some of interesting varieties for my snowdrop-garden!

I certainly enjoyed it as a magical day, Brian! And I was so pleased to meet Kentish Lass. I think I recognized a few others, but I dared not disturb their snowdrop frenzy! ;o) (and I had mine to take into account!)
A magical encounter with snowdrop mythical names too! Like joe Sharman, Alan and Anita Thorpe, Mrs MacLennan, the people from Glenchantry, etc..
In the afternoon we visited the Chelsea Physic Garden. It was their opening day this year, and Joe Sharman was expected there on the next day I believe.
A very nice place indeed, very well tended!

So pleased you enjoyed your day over here, it was great to see you and good to hear you got home safe and sound - it must have been a very long day!

Great day at Shaftesbury yesterday. Interesting, entertaining speakers and nice atmosphere. I think Joe Sharman won for technical interest but Anna Pavord for the most seductive! The sales were more Myddleton than Alpine Garden Society but I can elbow with the best of them!

An excellent talk, as one may expect, and a very enjoyable event. The snowdrops offered were often different from those seen at similar events in Germany, and the weather was perfect for a walk through the wonderful park with its great range of hamamelis in flower. Met a lot of friends and made some new ones.

Lecture: "Intrinsic Beauty: Snowdrops, Choice Bulbs, and How They Enrich Gardens"
Saturday, 1:00 pm, Copeland Lecture Hall
Snowdrops and other choice, early bulbs bring much more to the garden than beauty. They are the objects of passion and desire that have led plant explorers to remote regions of the world. They are controversial as their provocative taxonomy and obsessive horticultural interest sometimes bring out the best or worst of the people intimately associated with them. Many are rare in the wild and serve as flagship species for conservation efforts. Lastly, they are exotic, providing a sense of place in the garden at a time of the year that few other plants can rival. In this presentation, Dr. Peter Zale, curator and plant breeder, Longwood Gardens, will touch on these topics while highlighting some of the more interesting stories related to these plants. In closing, he will discuss their role in garden amplification efforts at Longwood Gardens and the development of his personal garden.

We are hoping to see you at the Yorkshire Snowdrop Trail event at Primrose Bank Nursery, Kexby, Near York YO41 5LH this weekend (17-18 Feb).
There will be some wonderful winter flowering plants for sale - shrubs, herbaceous and bulbs. Dryad Nursery will be taking snowdrops, eranthis and hepaticas. Our snowdrops are almost all at greatly reduced prices to clear. I really don't want to take them home again!
We will have at least 85 varieties available, including:
17 double varieties
9 extra early varieties, including reginae-olgaes
2 poculiform varieties
5 inverse poculiform varieties
3 green-leaved varieties
10 green tipped varieties
6 species
3 virescent
And some specials! We don't have a lot of any particular variety so some things may sell out quickly.
We will be auctioning a pot of Dryad Gold Bullion (with 3 flowers) on the Sunday, but bids may be left on the Saturday, if that is the only day you will be there. A chance to obtain this wonderful variety at Yorkshire prices!
There will also be talks, including by myself, and delicious teas available. Sue's beautiful garden will be open for visitors to enjoy.
This event is in aid of The Anthony Nolan Trust - both Sue (Primrose Bank's owner) and I have personal reasons to support this charity which arranges bone marrow transplants for leukaemia sufferers, so we hope you will help us to support this very worthy cause.

Great day at the CGS Snowdrop event yesterday. Interesting talks and good sales. The revelation, for me at least, was the visit to Thendon arboretum in the afternoon. The garden itself is a masterpiece of design and good planting. It’s in immaculate condition and clearly lovingly tended. The surprise was the great variety of carefully labelled Snowdrop cultivars (and a few species). Some of these are in large drifts while others are in smaller groups, gradually expanding I guess. It was a great opportunity to appreciate the impact of the various (many) cultivars en masse. I don’t know how many cultivars are represented, many were what I understand to be ‘good doers’, but it was almost overwhelming (never thought I would write that!). Huge respect to the gardeners who clearly know exactly what they are doing. Loved it!
-
Thendon? Maybe that's Thenford ??
-
Sorry, not concentrating. Too many snowdrops!
-
I thought that perhaps you couldn't see the trees for the 'drops, David! ;D ;D
I had an interesting time searching online to find where Thendon was, though!

Yeah a big shame, I liked it there this last weekend, and it's just across the border from the Netherlands too.
We'll see next year what Dormagen is like. :)

I know! I'm considering going there, but it is a four hour drive.. Tough choice, haha. Would be interesting to see the new varieties.
Greetings from the east of the Netherlands :)

"Day of the Open Garden" in the church-garden Saxdorf on 10.3.2018. This church-garden is like a Botanic - Garden and starts with thousands of Galanthus, Eranthis and Crocus tomasianus. In the afternoon we heard a Klavier-concert and a informative powerpoint presentation about snowdrops by Hagen Engelmann.

Thank You, Maggi, this was a wonderful and informative "Open Gardenday" in Saxdorf. We visited the garden with thousands of Snowdrops, Crocus and Eranthis, had a good coffee and cake and heard the newest informations about the classification of snowdrops and the new varieties of Hagen Engelmann! Between the powerpoints we heard a fine Klavierconcert! A fine Sunday afternoon and sun rised the temperatures high till 18 °C!

Hallo Maggi, the +18 °C we had only saturday and sunday afternoon, now the temperatures normalisized and next weekends "the beast of the East" brings back the winter with snow and till -9 °C!
The classic Klavierkoncert in the Saxdorf garden was created from the pianist Stephan Hilsberg, a former member of the Bundestag Berlin. He loves the garden Saxdorf too! Greetings Harald Alex

It seems your event received lots of good publicity, as well as being a pleasure for those attending. Well done on achieving that, also.
We expect more bad weather here too- in fact we already have very cold windy weather here in North East Scotland. Feels like winter!
