Jo,highlight and copy the piece of the message you want to quote, then at the top of the reply box click the small yellow page second from right on the bottom line. When you move the courser over it it will say quote, two quote marks will appear in the text box, paste the piece you copied in the middle of the quote marks.

It is a matter of some regret to me that the Spellcheck seems to have serious shortcomings, or perhaps it is  simply exhausted?

Maggie

Don't beat yourself up, the Spellcheck is fine but it wasn't designed to make silk purses out of sows' ears. If it's exhausted, small wonder. Philistines 4, syntax 0. (No wonder Scolari had to go.)

If I am doing a long post I do it in word, spellcheck it, see there are no obscenties and then paste it in.

Don't let's get too hung up on this. The Forum is a 'broad church', open to all nationalities and all standards of  written English and requiring only a mutual love of plants.
I am sure Forumists will help out if there is any real difficulty in understanding.

Funny you should say that, Diane.... I can't see that it makes any odds at all when I try "preview".... I've never seen the point, because it looks the same to me.... I must be missing something   :-[

My views as well Maggi, I consider myself a reasonably good grower of some plants, but in no way a professor of the English language.

I suppose it's different in different browsers, although I tried in IE and Firefox and it's the same.
I tried Tony's post as it's got a smiley in it as well as a quote.  Here's the screen shot of the Post reply page
It shows the posting with the html codes in it, and above in the Preview box, how it will look.  You will see the code for the smiley is three question marks, which is interpreted as the "Huh" smiley.  Also the square brackets which will render as a blue quotation box.

I noticed that when I was using Firefox it underlined spelling mistakes in red. I had to change it to English as it was driving me daft! ::)

What language were you writing in, Anthony?

I can see no red lines here (I'm in Firefox) in the post reply box, or the preview box.  It does wavy red lines in Word, unless you turn it off, but even then pasted in here, the red wavy lines disappear.  One of life's deep mysteries  ::)

I was writing, or least trying to write, in English. Firefox was trying to change it to American! >:( A hundred years ago books written by American authors were printed for the British market in English (cf Gene Stratton-Porter); now supposedly English books are written in American. >:( Biology texts particularly annoy me: words like oestrogen and foetus have their 'os' dropped. Why? Not a word I like to hear, but as far as I am concerned a pedophile (paedophile) is a foot fetishist. :P If not, what does a pedometer measure?

You could try Google Chrome instead of Firefox, Anthony.  My copy is happy to offer spelling corrections in UK English.

Now, back to snowdrops.
Almost in Scotland.

When I queried a spelling a little while ago I was told English is an evolving language and we have to be open to change.

Last night I watched a well known bully, sorry politician, frothing at the mouth on newsnight speaking incoherently  in some form of mangled English and thought soon be morning and as Anthony says back to the snowdrops.

I suppose on the forum the most important thing is to be able to get the gist of what is meant and enjoy the plants.

I should add another glorious day here the sixth in a row, getting boring now
