Fungicide for chipping bulbs
« on: November 05, 2019, 05:56:21 PM »
I recently studied the excellent and informative thread on chipping and  twin scaling galanthus bulbs. An essential component seems to be the use of a fungicide to prevent rotting. Is there one or more proven fungicides available in the UK and what are their names? Also, are they readily available in garden centres or is it an internet transaction?  Jack

I have just read Anne Wright's treatise on chipping and twin scaling in the October I. R. G. and fungicide "Fungus Clear Ultra" is mentioned so I have one lead.

I have been reading through back issues of Ian Young’s amazing bulb log, and am pretty certain that when he detailed exactly how he chips bulbs he mentioned sulphur.  It would be well worth your time looking up this reference.

A number of years ago a group of friends had a snowdrop chipping party.  I can't remember which list of instructions we followed.  The others followed the list exactly.  I left out one thing. All the others were successful, but I was not.

I plan to try again and I will obey the rules this time.

Thank you Diane and Steve. I appreciate your time. However, I now have answers to my question. 1) there does not seem to be a specific liquid fungicide which can be used when chipping bulbs. Any fungicide which one might purchase for roses seems to be appropriate.  Fungus Ultra Clear has been used successfully by Anne Wright - a good enough recommendation for me.
2) I do use green sulphur on cuttings, particularly when I want to keep the cut surface rot free while a callus is forming. I also use it on damaged bulbs while the damaged area is "healing". I imagine it might be a bit difficult to control if used for chipping.

Once again, many thanks

What is green sulphur?

The only sulphur I have is a bright yellow powder.

We  used to be  able to get  sulphur  powder that was  green. I think it  may simply  have  been dyed  green!  I do not  know  if it  is  still available.

My recollection is that green sulphur had added powdered charcoal. Not sure if it was supposed to enhance its use/ purpose or just keep it as an easier flowing powder.

From an old Amateur Gardening
EU bans sulphur fungicids for the amateur
David Senior of product firm Vitax told AG: “We are no longer able to supply green and yellow sulphur as fungicides in the EU.
“While the fungicidal use of yellow sulphur has been withdrawn, we are continuing to supply the same material as a garden sundry.
“The material is still of value as a soil acidifier and a secondary nutrient for sulphur-deficient soils.
“Labelling on the current products has been amended,” David added.
