Forgot to mention I phoned my Broadband supplier technical support and got through to the Philippines. A female answered and asked me what colour of cable I was using,I said grey,she said that's your problem ,you should be using a yellow or orange cable.
I .. found much that I didn't understand but also a suggestion that the problem was being caused by a particular Windows update, KB 3057839
and that by uninstalling the update the problem would be solved.
but I'm fairly certain the update will creep back when the next batch of Windows updates are issued and I have no idea if the lack of the update is causing any further problems.
