PAST TRIPS TO CENTRAL AND NORTH-CENTRAL GREECE
« on: May 13, 2012, 11:23:16 AM »
Hello again
I decide to show you photographs from past trips I took to various mountains in Central and North-Central Greece.  All of these pictures ere taken with a classical Minolta camera.  Some were converted into digital form directly from the negatives and they are of relatively good quality.  Others, I converted into a digital form by photographing selected paper photos with my digital camera and therefore are not of such good quality.

It will take several days, if not weeks, to finish this.  I will need help in identifying sp and please correct me for any mistakes I may be making.

I start with the digital images from the negative film.

This is my trip to Central Pindus (Mesohora) bordering the Agrafa mountains. Pictures were taken between 800 and 1200 m.

Date: April 28

004, 005, 006: Yellow viola sp

008: Colchicum leaves (quite large)

010, 011: Anchusa (?) sp

020: Senecio (?) sp

021: sp, 30 cm tall

023: Arabis (?) sp

Continued in the following Posting ...

1508: Viola delphinantha, 1900 m

1511, 1519: White species (?), 2500 m

and some from the western side from 600 m to 900 m

March 15th

Reproduced from paper copies

Crocus chrysanthus to be gradually replaced at much higher altitudes by Crocu veluchensis.  However, although the distribution of the two species overlap both on mount Olympus and on mount Ossa, I have never seen hybrids.

I really enjoy posts like these showing flowers growing in their native habitat.  Please keep them coming.
Almost in Scotland.

Thank you Alan

Next, I continue with a very special place.  Location is in the Central Pindus mountains.  Most pics turned out of reasonable quality.  The place is around Kastania (850-900 m), the village where I come from and where I grew up - spent time during the summer months up to the age of 18.

Pics converted into digital form by photographing paper photos.

1579: The village of Kastania.  I am standing at 1000 m and it is March 25th

1582, 1585: Crocus sieberi ssp sublimis (March 25th).  The colour variation, as will be seen in the folowing entries, is significant

1586, 1593: The population on a larger scale.  The direction of the photo is SW so the hill slopes in a NE direction.

1645, 1634: Orchis laxifloragrows  in the hills just above the last houses in sloping meadows (900 m) later on in the season on May 14th

1648: Early in June in shady places and by rivulets grows this unidentified Orchis sp in large numbers

Next, on the other side of the village are spectacular mountains.  Here grows another Crocus sp

1595: The mountains, it is May 14th

1599, 1601: At 1900 m, May 14th, Crocus sp (most likely Cr veluchensis, quite different form from what I see in Olympus, Ossa and
                    surrounding areas)

1596, 1611: At 1800 m, May 14th, this Orchis sp in two colour forms

1643, 1674: At 1800 m, May 14th, Cyclophyllus (sp?) and Anemone blanda

1679: Not of good quality, Aethionema (?) sp growing in large numbers

Next, in August in the same mountains

1665: sp (genus ?, please) at 1700 m

1605, 1609: Aubrieta sp (?) growing at 2100 m.  I measured it (pic 1605) about 2m across

1615, 1619: Geranium sp (sabcaulens ?) at about 2000 m

Earlier in the season, I had found this Myosotis sp at 1950 m

1603: Myosotis (sp?)

Lower down,

1652: Acanthus (balcanicus?), not so well focused, at 1300 m early June

In a densely wooded gorge (1000-1200m)

1658, 1660, 1666: Digitalis (sp?) in June

1630: Lilium chalcedonicum in July

Now let's go to the same area in September.  Colchicum sp doninate and later on (early November) Crocus cancellatus ssp mazziaricus

1637: Colchicum sp at 700 m.  September 8th.  Kastania is in the background.

1576, 1636, 1641: Colchicum sp in close up (1576).  The flowers of this sp have light tesselation or no teselation at ll.  The leaves in the spring are 3-4, about 0,5-1 cm and slightly twisted.  Can anybody gime me an idea of what sp this could be?
