Ayr Flower Show 2008
«

We have just come back from the Ayr Flower Show after viewing giant begonia blossoms and contrived floral art exhibits. Our own local group took third prize in the Golden Rose Trophy.
That we had an exhibit at all is thanks to Sheila McNulty who designed and built it herself. This is probably the worst time of year for Rock Garden Plants, the choice of flowering specimens being very limited. Not only that, but the stand had to have Robert Burns theme. Those familiar with Burn's work will notice the Brig o' Doon and daisies prominent in the display. The hanging basket has a witch ( Tam o' Shanter ) on the support bracket. Surprise, surprise, the winner was the local floral art group !! However, the main purpose of our stand is to drum up new members to bolster our ageing group.

Thanks , Tom, for this "hot off the press" report...... the stand looks great....super display for midsummer and well done to the ever resourceful Sheila ....she is a wonderful woman.... typical of SRGC ladies, of course... I have to say that, don't I?
I know that Sheila is heavily involved in the ongoing success of the SRGC Ayr Group displays and this is a fine example of her work. Especially hard to make a display when hemmed in by a theme like that... more suited to floral art, but as you've told us, there IS often a clue

What a lovely piece of work. The lady must have spent a great deal of time on it. Pity it didn't get a prize but I hope it achieves the objective Tom.

I forgot to mention that Sheila got first prize for a garden constructed on a wooden palette. She finished her exhibits at 2am- there's dedication for you !

Ayr Rock Garden Club staged an exhibit in the Horticultural Societies Competition. This year 20 per cent of marks were given for a Burns Tribute. We included the Brig O Doon with witch and many daisy type flowers such as Ursinia, Felicia, Delosperma etc. drawing inspiration from a line in Ode to a Daisy - " The flaunting flow'rs our gardens yield ".
Although we only managed a third there was a good deal of favourable interest from the public and hopefully some new members.
