SRGC at Scone Garden Festival 2024
« on: May 16, 2024, 06:58:48 PM »
A small group consisting of Alison Hogg. Ian and Ann Christie, Jeanie Jones and myself will bring plants to set up a one metre  square pallet garden on Thursday 30th  May so the club has  a presence   at the two day show on Friday 31st  and Saturdary 1st June.  It  will be based on the well known  fishbox troughs  two of which have   been prepared  by Wattie Russell. One trough will feature alpines  in flower that  like sunny conditions. The other will have shade loving plants including  miniature ferns and hostas. There will be stone strata, logs and moss, not shown in the mock up. Different plants will be at the show.   There will be taller plants, probably meconopis, celmisias and taller primulas at the sides  and behind  the troughs plus an info board.

A few more snaps. The troughs part planted plus Jeanie Jones's primulas  in the van. The troughs  in position  mounted on upturned pots. Ian's plants  for the back. the peacock  butterfly liked the celmisias  - larger peacocks noisily roam the grounds.

The pallet complete. I should have taken some close ups to show  the  diversity of plants -approx 60 different species /cultivars. We have labled them which  some may find  a bit obtrusive  but  it lets the public  know what they are.

Any chance of a plant list for the shade plant display (trough plus side plants)? I'm wishing I'd put in a request for a close-up photo as the longer distance shots look good and I was intrigued as soon as I read about it. We don't see nearly as many planting designs for shady troughs or crevice gardens as we do for sunny ones and they're much more likely to work for people with small urban gardens, so I'm glad this was included in the display.

Many thanks for the additional photos and the plant lists. I thought I had a good knowledge of the sort of plants one might use in a shady trough, but Chiastophyllum oppositifolium was new to me. It's always interesting to see how other people approach a particular garden niche. Really helpful for comparison purposes to have so many different primulas assembled togther too.
