Passing of a treasured SRGC member and good friend - Bob Gordon.
« on: December 12, 2020, 01:33:54 PM »
From Ian Christie:
"We have been informed today that Bob Gordon from Portglenone has passed away after  a  long  illness. Bob was a very special grower of  alpine  and woodland plants and had one of the very best gardens in Northern Ireland: his contribution to shows at home and for SRGC were magnificent plants. We are very sad to hear of his passing A very special friend."

I am among the  many  who will find  this very sad news - Bob was a consummate gentleman and a very good friend to many. A man with a wonderful garden and a tremendous talent for growing quality plants and with a generous side to match. In days gone by Bob was always a member of the Irish contingent visiting the SRGC Discussion Weekends and some shows too. His loss after such a long illness is in some ways a relief but he will be very sorely missed.

The  spectacular  trillium,  T. chloropetalum  'Bob Gordon'  named and  shown by  Billy  Moore, who grew  it  from seedlings  gifted  to him from Bob's  garden.

A comment from Harold McBride  "This yellow form of T. Chloropetalum is probably the best plant of Irish origin to emerge for many years . It also fittingly bears the name of one of Ireland's most generous & talented gardeners who was of course the raiser."

Mark Smyth took us to visit Bob on our first visit to Northern Ireland many years ago.
The garden was full of amazing plants and trees.
Sad to lose someone as experienced and as knowledgeable as him,
regards
