Paeonia advice - and more
« on: September 13, 2017, 12:38:41 PM »

I found this great note from Gabriela .....
"This is the perfect time to sow peonies and other species who require a warm period for the root growth followed by a cold period(winter) for breaking the shoot dormancy. If sown too late they will need two years for complete germination.
Species peonies are now in stock (maybe more later)

Hydrophyllum species: virginianum and canadense have the same germination pattern and are also best sown at this time."

Opened this eager to read something new about peonies Maggi :D :)
Well, I should add then that two weeks ago I also sown the peonies seeds I got from last Seedex. A good way to be economic with the space for the winter sowings, they would have stayed there doing nothing anyway.

For those who are not familiar, a method for winter 'sowing' consist in with placing the seeds in Ziploc bags with moist medium, keep at warm until the root emerge (about 2 months) and then place them in the fridge; by spring they are ready for potting before the shoots growth. It works but I find it too much trouble (need to check them often, especially when in the fridge).
