Magnolia wilsonii and Magnolia sieboldii seed.
« on: September 08, 2015, 02:39:00 PM »
If anyone would like some fresh Magnolia wilsonii seed, please send  me a PM.
It should be hardy throughout the UK (Cluny Gardens has one).
It loses viability quickly if dried, so not really suitable for the seed exchange.
Will need to be soaked in soapy water for a few days to get the flesh off..  ..then cold stratification for 3 months in the fridge..  ..then germinate at about 60 deg F.
Grows rapidly...  my plant about 4m x 4m after 5yrs.. flowering after about the 3rd yr if you're lucky.

Giles  - Should there be no takers I can send you the RHS Rhodo Camellia & Magnolia Group seedex address. They will treat the seed properly and would be delighted to get seed.

I like the bottom picture Giles. Tastes good in a salad does it? :)

No hard seeds in my salad! Last week I almost broke my teeth on a olive stone :-X

One year ago I broke a molar - a very expensive experience :-X :-X

Oh yes, very expensive. No wonder many people opt not to go to a dentist! Dentisry should be on national health schemes. It's not here, but getting too far away from the magnolia subject. :)

I am amazed that you can get flowers after only 3 years.  I grew about 40 plants from both Wilsonii and Sieboldii some 10 years ago and then realised that they were too large to plant in my overfull garden.  They were found good homes and a batch of them were given to NTFS at Culzean about 3 years ago. We discovered a few of them planted in the large walled garden.  I hope to see the flowers sometime but from talking to others it seems 10 years is the average time to flowering.
As luck would have it, the one plant we kept for ourselves died after a year!

A seed pod each of Wilsonii and Sieboldii were collected last September and the seeds were sown on the 30th. Two pots were sown using composted tree bark (melcourt) Aldi's finest and some grit.  They were left outside on a raised bench and germination took place in March. They are still at the two-leaf stage with the roots starting to come out of the 3" pots.
